Nobody shares the same taste in music
« on: 17 Aug 2012, 01:52 am »
Nobody I know shares the same likes & dislikes in music I do. Though I noticed there are one or two members that listen to some of the same albums.

Even so, my observation is that even if two people like the same song. They like it for different reasons.

Women tend to like music for emotional content and therefore are more inclined to listen to lyrics. Whereas lyrics for me for the most part is just part of the overall sound of the song and rarely know all the lyrics of a song.

One thing I can't stand in music is if the song or usually the band sounds commercial. Meaning their music is intended to generate money by appealing to the masses, lacking artistic creativity and talent.

Very few songs are hits, yet most of us recognize a hit song when nobody shares the exact same likes and dislikes in music.

Thoughts on the subject?

Having different ideas about what music works for any one person is why we ,(I), can't really share my listening with friends. It remains a very subjective experience. Each time I say," Oh you have to hear this sound " it usually won't give the same thrill to my guest as it does to me. So music listening remains a lonely but very glorious adventure into 'Self '.

You also have to take into account that musical tastes will evolve and change, in different ways for different people, and not everyone is at the same place in this regard.

Music is the language of the soul. If everyone thinks the same, then nobody thinks.

I have very eclectic tastes. I buy and listen to just about everything form Aderly to Zappa. The only music I can't abide is Country Pop. I also feel sorry for those who never outgrew the music of their youth. Those people who only listen to music recorded during their adolescents. I guess I subscribe to Duke Ellington's admonition. There's only two kinds of music, good and all the rest.

Every generation has quality music. Sometimes you have to dig a bit to find it.

You know Doc, I've thought a lot about that statement by the Duke over the years. I also have thought about the music being a supposed "universal language." I think both statements are cute, touchy-feel good aphorisms that underplay the fact that if music is a language, one has to learn (or at least become familiar) with the syntax and vocabulary of an unfamiliar musical language to be in a position to judge its worth. The first time I heard twelve tone, serial, Iranian classical music, Indian classical music, late Coltrane, etc. etc., it was all so unfamiliar too my ears reared on even temperament scales and familiar western harmony that I thought it all was uninteresting. Gradually, as I listened a lot to the unfamiliar, it all became familiar and I learned to love it. It takes some effort to learn a new musical language and many people just don't have an interest in expanding their range (thus the "stuck in the music of my youth" phenomenon.)

The whole exchange between Doc and Rocket brings to mind the immortal words of Sgt. Hulka:
"Lighten Up Francis"

This strikes at the heart of your topic right here.

I listen to music for emotional content....

What is the point of enjoying art, if not for some emotional connection? Even analyzing music for technical merit envokes a form of emotional response.

I also like lyrical content as well. Some songs can tell a great story, or highlight something on your mind that you otherwise couldn't put into words.

Doc,

I think context is everything...especially on the internet where face to face interaction isn't happening and consequently tone of voice, facial expressions and other cues to intent are lacking.  IMHO, implying racial bias to Rocket's use of the word "boy" in the context of his joking post is importing negative meaning where it was not intended and could not have been intended.  Unless Rocket knows you (and your post indicates he does not) how could he know your race and thus how could his use of the term "boy" be racially motivated?  I think there are a number of possible meanings of his use of "boy" not all of which are as negative as you assumed.  I try to assume that most slights online --perceived or actual-- are really based upon misunderstandings and overreactions to those misunderstandings.  My post was simply trying to "lighten up" things.  Sorry if you feel offended--that was not my intent.

Isn't that the point. He doesn't know what color I am. The use of the term boy is just plain insensitive under any circumstances where you just don't know who you're talking to.

I don't agree that use of the term "boy" is insensitive under all circumstances.  I think it's only insensitive if it has the intent you ascribed to it.  But the context of Rocket's post indicated no such intent, imo.
