Here are the speakers I DIY'd from Selah Audio.  The model is the TRT.

Nice speakers Wingnut,
Did you sculpt those on a CNC or is that by hand?

I've read that a push/pull (isobaric) configuration yields about the same lower end extension with about half the box volume.  But, another thought occurred to me as I was pondering your design:  I may be totally wrong about this, but it seems to me that the two woofers would tend to cancel the box resonances, at least within the smaller internal enclosure.  My objection to most speaker boxes are the resonances rebounding to the cone, causing distortion and that "box sound".  Just a thought....

Rklein,
Those are some of the most beautiful speakers I've ever seen!

Here are a few of my past builds:

These are some Hawthorne Audio Speakers, the 15" Silver Iris with bass duties handled by the Augie:

These were GR Research OB 5 on top with a Hawthorne Augie picking up the bass duties:

These are GR Research N3's I built for my sister:

These are the GR Research V1s I am using today, here is a link to my build thread for anyone who is interested:

I am currently considering a full range (actually wide range in this case) build using the Eminence Beta 12LTA, since this would be for my son it would have to be a boxed speaker build, he doesn't have room for an OB setup which would be my preference.

Jazzman.
I programmed and machined the front baffle on the top MTM cabs on a CNC VMC machine.
I am a programmer/cnc machinist by trade, which for building loudspeakers is a real plus.

rklein.
Beautiful looking speakers. Awesome finish.

Fantastic builds.
Love the GR Research OB 5/Hawthorne Augie's.
Your sister has one hell of a brother.

Jazzman,
Your hybrid electrostats and ripole subs look amazing. Looks like you really put alot of thought and time into your design. Wish I would have gotten into building electrostats years ago but the thought of building such a system seemed to be over my head.
I look forward to reading your blog about them.

Different, for sure.  I thought the RM40's were great speakers but had a weak midbass but strong low bass.  Great mids and highs too, but they really needed a bit of space to sound their best.  I used to have a bigger space, but don't anymore.

Interesting.  I remember my RM40s having excellent midbass but relatively speaking worse low bass than midbass.  Liked the RM40s better than the Salks I have, but the wife didn't like the size of the RM40s.

Prelude,

I thought about building the Orion's, but needing something like 12 channels of amplification
knocked me out of the ballgame.

They must sound amazing.

Well, the 40's got a lot better after I went active and moved the crossover point from a ridiculously low 166hz to around 300hz.  The midpanels just did not like doing much of anything below 300hz.  We had them in a pretty large room previously, but the new place they just dominated the small space, visually.  Sold them to Pez and he's loving them, using them fully active with SET amps on the mids and highs, and monster SS amp on the woofers.

 :?:

I thought you did the midwoofer upgrade which moved the x-o to @280hz on all RM40s made since 2005.

Wirenut,
Why 12 channels of amp!?
Even if you would use one for each driver,it would be 10 channel which you would not need that at all.Unless you are a very kind person and volunteer to power up the neighbours also. :thumb:
I am using total of 6 channels right now and the woofers are connected in parallel.

Did both, actually.  Woofer upgrade was 1st, active was 2nd.  Both improved the sound, but using a steeper slope at even higher (300 vs 280) helped remove strain from the midpanels even more.  Too bad the 10 inch woofers sounded bad above 300hz, or I'd have pushed it even higher.  Plus the top woofer was doing most of the midbass by itself, and if I pushed the XO to high, voices would start to localize a bit at the top of the speakers.

I was looking at the Linkwitz Lab AT6012 amp that has 12 channels at 60 W/channel.
From Linkwitz web site he states that his Orion 4 loudspeakers utilize 8 channels of amplification which would leave 4 channels of his amp available for any future use, such as surround speakers.

Yes,and I was just thinking that might be the confusion for you.The AT6012 has 12 channels which he never used the 4 channels and he prefers to connect the woofers with separate amps but you can also use the AT1806 which has only 6 channels.Look at the video here see how they do the demo with pass labs.

Waking up a sleeping thread.... My cabinets came back from being beautified by Ruben (outofthewoods) last weekend and I put the drivers in last night. Still very happy with the results except that now they actually look nice. Pardon the smudges, I need to get a nice polishing cloth.

Thanks Keith, same system, the Abbey's are currently in the hallway outside the room. Time will tell but I'm happy thus far, still, I need to listen a lot and see how it goes long term.

Those look really nice. Is that the leatherette option on the side panels?
