Help replacing headphone cable or selecting extension cable

Hi,
Any recommendations on extension cable? or a way to replace headphone cable?
Looking to replace the cable for a Radio Shack Titanium headphones that my daughter's use in the car for road trips. The cord has gotten frayed in several places to the point were it no longer works.
These are the headphones, made by Koss:
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F007%5F003%5F004%5F000&product%5Fid=33%2D1182
I don't see an easy way to open the ears to get to the wire connection. So, I'm thinking of replacing from the Y adapter down to the plug.
I would love to get an extension cable similar to the Grado's though not for $40.
Thanks for the advice,
Al
