I just got AppleTV configured as my Ipod Touch "dock" via AirPlay and this works really well. Especially with MOG's IOS app, I can select, stream and control just about anything I want to listen to from the Touch. A friend who uses MOG's Ipad app says it's interface and functionality is even cooler.
I initially connected the AppleTV to my DAC with toslink and that didn't sound too bad. I then connected the ATV through a HDMI switch with coax SPDIF out to the DAC and this sounds better. Tonally some tunes can sound a bit rough around the edges, but I'm actually hearing hints of dimensionality and soundstaging out of these streamed files. I can't help but be impressed with the sound quality considering the source (320kbs MP3s streamed from the Touch). It's not going to replace well recorded CDs or hi-rez files, but it's certainly good enough to replace buying most current pop/rock CD releases.
Considering the modest investment (AppleTV, Ipod or Ipad, $10mo subscription) this is an easy way to tap into and enjoy MOG's impressive music catalog on the big rig. For some folks who just want to enjoy the music without obsessing over gear and ultimate sound quality, it may be all they need.
