I have been watching TCM a lot lately. 1939 was amazing for not only the number of films but also the quality of the films released that year:

Gone with the Wind
Goodbye Mr. Chips
Wizard of Oz
Dark Victory
Babes in Arms
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Wuthering Heights
Drums Along the Mohawk
The Four Feathers
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Ninotchka
Of Mice and Men
Stagecoach
Young Mr. Lincoln
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Allegheny Uprising
Dodge City
The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex

That is just a sample. Do you think there was any other year that approached the quality of 1939? Do you think there was an equivalent year for music in terms of albums. I would vote for 1967 or 1969 for music.

When film buffs are asked the "Which year?" question, the answer is universally 1939.  I don't think there is a a good argument for any other.

1939 was amazing.  Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz were the first color blockbusters.

This was truly a great time in music and movies.  Here is a link to the popular music of 1939: http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/Charts/1939.html 1939 was also a year that saw record sales increase 50% over the prior year http://rateyourmusic.com/list/fixbutte/1939__swing_loses_lead_among_the_best_selling_records__life_magazine_of_dec_18__1939_
