Interesting. Speakers are tested in anechoic chambers. Why would't this be the ideal listening room?

Because in a real concert hall, sounds come from all around you. You cannot capture those sounds and replay them from two sound sources in front of you (with nothing coming from anywhere else) and expect it to sound the same. It cannot.

Or you could listen outside, in a field.

hey Tyson.

Been there, and done that many times.  It is quite remarkable, and no reflections

Better have some good subs, to pressurize the great outdoors! :)

It has to be known and assumed that each of us will have reasons and preferences to the SOUND we like.  This will be shaped by the recordings we listen to, the speakers and systems we employ, and just simply what floats our individual boats.

Very true indeed!
But one thing we can all agree on, is that live sounds best.

Most of my "outdoor" home concerts were with Altec VOT type speakers rather nearfield (actually out in the field)  So the Bass was OK :thumb:

In a very good concert hall, sound comes from the musicians, not from all around you. And if a recording is made with only two mics, then what? I would assume recording engineers record music based on the fact with the fact in mind that most music is played back in stereo, with two speakers. Two BOX speakers.

On most stages that I have been on, the sound has a lot of live ambiance to it.  Listening to simple stage recordings, which are more common with Classical music, I find that on box speakers that aliveness is lost.  I played some Classical recordings on the Philharmonic 2s and it sounded more like I was on the stage with the orchestra than any other speaker that I have heard.  They created the illusion of total reality.  I have heard most of the speakers out there.  That was the only time that I experienced that effect.  The Philharmonics are pseudo open baffle speakers.

Most studios I've seen pictures of show high end monitors or speakers, usually two of them in stereo, and usually box type speakers....

All concert halls have "acoustics" - the behavior of sound within the hall. You don't here it like an echo - but there is a reverberant field that does not come from the musicians (directly).

Nobody is arguing that. If you are convinced that you must therefore also listen to box speakers, then there is little point in discussing or trying to explain anything.

Sorry Bob. I posted while you were in the midst of doing so. I am a percussionist and have played in different bands and settings for 30 years. It never occurred to me while I was on stage with other musicians to listen to the quality of the soundstage or the depth of the presentation. All I cared about was the mix; could I hear everyone. It's different when I sit down in my listening room to hear some good tunes. But why? And why OB as opposed to anything else? Back to what was said earlier then; whatever sounds best to me... Even if it's Bose.

You are starting to become petulant John. I am not 'convinced' of anything.

Let's not make it personal. Is there something that you still want to know after all the answers that you received to your questions?

Only a fool would assume they are hearing reality!

Really, let us know when God whispers in your ear in true fidelity!

I merely responded to your personal remark about my apparently being convinced of something, as if I had an agenda. All my posts stand. I am curious about the OB presentation and why some think it's the be all / end all. And I have stated I haven't heard it myself. I have also been quite clear on why I posted this to begin with; I am curious about how this type of speaker would seem to be adding to, or changing the original recording much like the Bose speaker does /did. I hope that's ok with you?

Your titling of this thread, and your constant repetition of BOX speaker and Bose, does rather suggest that you do have an agenda. But if not, you've been given plenty of information to digest. Cheerio.

The titling of the thread was meant to be interesting or to attract attention. It was interesting to me. I was seeking to start a thread that I knew many would be interested in and that would seem to be the case. Are you telling us all that we have enough information now and to shut up?

I've never heard a Bose speaker by the way. (Except perhaps when I was in some shoe store ....)
