Black Damped Platter/Reference Clamp Wanted
« on: 4 May 2012, 02:48 pm »
Hi,

As it now seems impossible to get these parts new via Stanalog or elsewhere, does anyone want to come to an amicable arrangement (cash) to part with one or both of these items?

I have a Classic V with clear acrylic platter and Classic clamp. I understand the black platter and reference clamp are worthy upgrades.

Thanks,

Graham

Whoever told you that is mistaken.   :nono:
The black damped was from the evil empire of Transparent when they had it.
It was not Mr F designed or approved.

But, enough of my low opinions, get one and try it and report back.
You can often find one for sale on audiogon.

Do you mean the Transparent wire bandits? That had to be a hideous period for Mr. F.

Lol... I like that... wire bandits... I'll have to borrow that if I may...

Yes, and in that one interview from not too long ago, he's still unhappy about it.
And Stanalog as well.  It's tough out there sometimes.

Well the term "wire bandits" is 20+ years old and I can't take credit for it. If you can reach back in your memory bank 20+ years, you'll remember there was a time when any bozo that could melt solder suddenly became a "cable designer". Of course wanting the same status as a real designer of audio equipment. ....like one who designs an amp, speaker, turntable , etc. Hence the "wire bandit" term was born.

@threadkiller - Not necessarily told, just research when you think you can get a little more out of what you've got. I admit the reviews were mixed, so I will do the right thing and not throw good money away.

What about the Reference Clamp? Would that work with my version?

I have the late model with the round motor. I had to rewire the arm and found some lovely stuff made by Aural Harmony...

Yes it's wrapped round the outside of the arm, but it's not bad looking. It's transformed the playback quality.

I've not made any other tweaks except an earth wire from the tonearm phonos to the amp to cure Decca hum.

It looks like you can interchange the clamps if you run a tap down the center of the spindle; otherwise the large clamp won't thread down far enough.
