Wooble in the platter
« on: 27 Apr 2012, 12:06 pm »
Is this normal on the Simplex/Amadeus?

I suppose it is, there only being 2 points of contact....

Are you asking when you push from the top on one side and it rocks a little?
Or when a record is spinning?
Yes to the first, definitely no to the second.

It is the first: perfectly normal is what I hoped to hear.

Thank you.

Well this all has me second guessing my platter.  Mine has somewhat of an undulating motion to it.  Here is a video.  Is this an acceptable amount of wobble or should I seek to have it fixed?  Also, please note that this is when the speed is 45rpm.  At 33 it's a little less noticeable, but noticeable nonetheless.

Looking at that video, my 2 cents worth, would be no wobble is acceptable, that looks pretty bad. There was a discussion on one of the boards about lower Rega's wobbling, not acceptable!
P5 here is perfect, of course I'm using the Groovetracer Sub-platter mated with the GT Delrin platter it should be.

That certainly looks wrong. It could be the spindle isn't seated properly in the lower bearing. Did you try lifting it out and lowering it by the holding the spindle itself?

I've tried many a time to re-seat it in the bearing housing, and still cannot alleviate the wobble.  No worries though.  Mr. Pranka, who is one of the best people I've dealt with in audio, is on the case.  The situation should be resolved soon.

Great to hear!  That's the only thing my non tech mind could think of, was the bearing/ seating issue. Please post your outcome.

I thought you might have already tried that but since nobody else had chimed in yet...     ;^ )

Glad to hear it will be looked after though!

It took me a few times to get that triangle to point directly at the motor. It would shift positions when I was trying to seat the platter and I would start all over again.

My old WT Record Player doesn't have wobble in the platter exactly, but even with the plinth level, the platter is not:  the end
away from the motor assembly is considerably higher.  I'm not sure whether to worry about this or what to do about it.
Any ideas?

Is your belt too tight? Motor in correct position?

With the belt off it lists in the same direction, even more so.
The position of the motor (square in this case) is not supposed to be crucial.
I wonder if the bearing cup is not straight in the plinth.

yes I agree with thread killer

mick wolfe wrote "Hell, a slightly tight belt has a better chance of thowing the platter out of balance than a clamp does."

So what is the tenson of the belt.  Maybe the tenson is too high.

Sorry Bob....I never wrote or pasted that statement.  The confused poster quoted you on that one, not me.

But I hasten to add that your statement is spot on. A belt of less than optimum length would send the platter into vertigo.
