Cool build Jon, nice work. It appears you have glued a piece of lumber between two pieces of plywood, are there no concerns with the lumber shrinking and swelling or did you use some type of joint that would allow the lumber to move?

Ed. We will see. The wood is all grained the same way and I did use screws where I could hide them and of course lots of glue. I should be ok in a regular household setting. Big left outside?????? Separation may occur. Fronts are maple sandwiching Brazillian cherry, Baltic Birch sides and back with walnut bases. Full pictures to come tonight.

I have often wondered if using lumber would be a non issue since they live in conditioned space. I would much prefer working with lumber vs mdf, plywood is not too bad. Anxiously waiting for the pics.

Clear shellac and the two coats of water based satin clear. Sanding between all coats and letting dry fully.

Listening to the Stereophile Test CD number 2, and Ave Maria by Schubert sounds wonderful. The imaging is spot on, there is a tiny sizzle at the top that needs to be corrected, the violins sound as if they are playing in front of you. Current system is spouting out of an Apple Airport Express 44/16 in to a Virtue 1.2 with regular psu of 15 watts, generic wire all around and separated by 10 feet- slight inward pitch.

Just to see what would happen, I have loaded the top three port holes on both sides with high density rubber foam floor pad. I wanted to see what would happen to the bass good or bad.

do you have a DAC with toslink available to try? Before installing a mini as dedicated music server, I noticed that bypassing the AEX's onboard DAC made a huge sonic improvement.

oh yes, in case I didn't post this already - gorgeous build - particularly nice detailing on the front baffle and vent spacer block

How do you reckon the TanKen compares to the Brines Acoustics M18-T772?

Using the 1772 in the Tanken the volume is similar and the actual vent/port volume is similar too. Looking from a basic perspective ....similar.... Bob makes very nice speakers and they sound great. Last time I looked he had a used pair of 1772 for sale.... Check out his site..

By no means am I the gold standard but by default.... I have always like the driver, and now am experimenting with the Dayton 8 too, but have gravitate towards teh TB's even though price is not great. I am currently trying to get it a little lower, which has always been my problem with single driver fullrange drivers, but thats common. I like the look, the top end of these drivers and the imaging is really good. Tom Petty's live sets sound wonderful. At volumes i have noted that the bottom end fills out much better and as always if I plug it in to 200 watts, sounds more full. Please remember I am only using an 8 watt KT66 amp, a Decware 3 watt amp and a couple Virtue 1.2 and 2.2 amps with both the low end power and high current power. Without reference to the low end, I am gravitating toward my Fonken 125 that David put together. It would need a low end helper, but sounds better in some instances. I am currently working on another project that may help my use with multiple fullrange drivers in a easily changing format. Think interchanagbility of any fullrange driver with low end grit! To come.......Is this build worth it, yes. Is there some mods to it, currently I am working with some things...

It looks cool.......but it sounds great too...
