sure MDF is "suitable" in that you can build a box with it, and working in a commercial millwork business for the past 20yrs I can attest it even offers some advantages in terms of machinability, but after a couple comparison builds a few years ago, "we" (Dave & I ) concluded that materials such as "baltic" birch (used here as a generic term for this general class of high ply count material) or even better when budget allows, the laminated bamboo plywood offer much beyond aesthetics alone.

and with or without an interrogative, the second sentence in your post quoted above is more than a bit insulting

Strictly materials. Blow up a piece of bamboo and watch 220 dollars go bye bye. Screw up Baltic, not so hurtful- 50 dollars. I need two sheets for this build also. I really wanted to integrate Danny's 8 inch sub but the amps are still not in from Brian. :'(

Let's all remember that like all things lumber there are different "grades" of MDF, some very well could be good for building cabinets. Me I'll stick with good plywood.

jo(h)n - I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before - here or other forums, but I've noticed a dramatic drop in quality over the past year or so of the particular BB plywood I've been using for almost a decade (literally from the Baltics, it's labeled on the packing in Cryllic, and made in Russia), and have switched to a NA domestic product for all but rough prototypes - which with a little of Terry)'s patented "tone sauce" and veneer can be made quite presentable.

Murphy Hardwood Plywood, Eugene Oregon - Maple face Multi-ply - lovely stuff. No doubt there should be similar quality domestic products available in most areas through commercial trade / jobber suppliers. Ya tend to get what ya pay for.

While I'm not personally a big fan of the finished / exposed ply edging that some interior designers still espouse, this material is pretty enough to finish as is. Keep in mind that as it's still a maple face veneer, darker stains can go quite blotchy without a prep seal.

It's really a bloody shame what's happened to the domestic logging and plywood industry- when I grew up there were 2 plants in my home town of Victoria alone, and dozens of large and smaller mills on the island. Take the drive past Comox/Courtenay and you can't help but wonder "how could we be running out of trees?"

I am behind..... I do have the speakers and all parts to the puzzle but have run in to time managment issues as I am finishing up finals. The drivers have been burned for 200 hours on a Virtue 2.2, and the wood and finishing materials are all sitting in a pile. These will be built, I promise.... I will post all the cool pictures and listening expectations/results as soon as I finish. Sorry.... I should not have thrown out a bone unless I was better than ready to finish it up.

It took me over 6 months to finish my SuperPensils so I totally understand how life gets in the way. No worries at all. Stay safe!!
