DIY Low wattage amps (Show off what you have)
« on: 12 Apr 2012, 08:38 pm »
Just discussed SET options with my tech buddy about making a DIY low wattage amp.

It turns out he has the parts (iron, chassis, and tubes) on hand to make a 22 WPC single ended parallel mono blocks using 1625 and 12SN7 tube compliment.

So, that is what I think will be my next amp.  Will post pictures once off the ground.

Let's see what else is out there.  8)

Make sure you describe what aspects of the sound you like.

My one and only DIY LWA.  I built it, so I like it.  Its got a sounds that I would describe as very engaging, organic, lively even a bit punchy.

My favorite DIY is a KT88 SET that was modified by a tech I know from a hand built one made by a guy in Australia - Eric McChanson

Nice match for my ML3 Reference even though they are only about 90db sensitive - it produces more than enough volume for me.

Not as good as my Trafomatic Experience 2 - but still not bad.

Thanks

Just finished my Decware Zen Triode SET amp yesterday...

Burning it in with a pair of "yet to be finished" zigmahornets,

Will soon drive the pair of Klipschorns in the back round.  Looking for a wood knob to replace the one I got from RatShack.

As far as the sound...I'm just glad I hear music  :hyper:

Mike, how do you like the Edcor iron?  Currently getting a 1625 amp put together with the Edcor iron.

Very nicely done, by the way!

Yep, the limit in the circle is about 25 watts, which is the highest that the First Watt amps output.   8)

Thanks!  This is my first tube amp, so I can't really compare it to anything.  Still going through the break in roller coaster, but there are times when I jump thinking someone else is in the room...playing with the band  :o

Thanks, again.  It's a 6mm diameter D shaft, but it doesn't stick out very far (it's actually soldered on the pcb...wish I had installed a longer one, but...), so the mounting screw needs to be a few mm from the back of the knob.

I am having trouble finding wood knobs!  If you have a couple that might work, I'll buy them!  I'm building another identical  amp as well.
