Guys, I spoke to PMC today regarding this issue to try and help get some clarity and they are saying that PMC moving away from Bryston couldn't be further from the truth, if anything PMC are looking to work closer with Bryston.

Basically they designed the IB2S XBD-A to do a specific job for studio purposes for which they have been extremely successful but as far as their active MB2's and BB5's they will be staying with Bryston power.

Like Alpha, I use 3 x DS-001's in my system, one for the centre and two for the rears and they really are amazing little amps that integrate perfectly with my 7B SST2's for front L+R.

We are going to have the IB2S XBD-A's at our open day on Saturday so it will be great to get some hands on experience with them, hooked up to a BDP-1 I'm expecting them to sound pretty spectacular :D

Take my post however you want.  The problem with typing on a forum is that you can see a person's emotions, body language, etc., and nor can you have a conversation in real time.  I can't possibly type every single thing I'm thinking on the fly and clarify it.

Actually, the problem you seem to have with typing on a forum appears to be that when you just post uninformed rubbish for the sake of it, your "comments" get held up to scrutiny and then you get all whiny. You know as well as anyone that calling something you haven't even bothered to hear "garbage" to score cheap popularity points on a manufacturer's forum is pretty lame. Saying that your comment is somehow made more valid because you're struggling with the medium you are using to express yourself just adds to the lameness.

You need to relax a bit.  Seems you're taking my comments a bit personally.  Did you design the Flying Mole amps?  Sorry if I offended you by posting what i did about the amps.

You need to get over yourself and admit that you are out of line on this one. That post of yours was nothing more than idle gossip and a drive-by smear job on gear you haven't even heard. Utterly worthless and of absolutely no value. Seriously, Stu Pitt...is that the best you can do?

Guys, well I have to say I have spent most of the afternoon listening to the IB2 XBDS-A's and can report even though they don't use Bryston power they are without doubt the best speaker I have ever heard, I have never heard anything like it, so much detail and finese, extremely crisp, precise, agile, fast and then there is the power and bass, these speakers can go low, they really are amazing, here's a pic from our showroom earlier, I can't wait to get back to work tomorrow and try some more of my favourite material, these speakers have just jumped to the top of my shopping list :)

Get all whiny?   Pot, meet kettle.  Getting all bent out of shape about something someone you've never met nor ever will posted on a forum about something that has absolutely nothing to do with you isn't whiny?  If that's not whining, I really need to reevaluate my working definition of whining.

Get off your high horse.  You're not the forum police.

As far as calling something that I've never heard garbage...

I didn't hear the amps that powered the DB1+
I heard another Flying Mole amp.  In and of itself, and especially compared to Bryston - Garbage

PMC replaces an amp that's meticulously designed and manufactured with an amp that's designed by someone who had it built by the lowest bidder - Garbage

PMC replaced an amp built by a company who's got a proven track record in quality and service with an amp who's built by a company that lasted a year or two - Garbage

PMC replaced an amp built by people who were paid an honest wage for honest work with an amp made in a third world communist country - Garbage

PMC replaced expensive amps with cheap ones, yet to the best of my knowledge didn't drop their price at all - Garbage

If it looks like garbage and smells like garbage, I'm very comfortable with calling it garbage.  Especially when I've personally heard its sibling sounding like garbage.  But hey, one man's garbage is apparently another man's treasure.  I'm sure people think of my gear as garbage.  Doesn't bother me one bit.

If all that doesn't define garbage, then nothing I say is going to change your mind.  Not that I remotely care what your opinion of me or anything else is.  You can have all the popularity points and all the success and cheers, and whatever else you think makes someone cool that you thought I was trying to gain.  Posting on a forum about stereos is pretty far from popularity IMO.

I've asked before, and I'll ask again...

Why are you taking my opinion so personally?

Which active version did you recently hear?   The current ones, the Bryston ones, or the Flying Mole ones?   They're not the same.

Here is a review of the "TB2" where the reviewer has used all three amps:
- Bryston Power Pac 120
- Flying Mole
- DS001

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul10/articles/pmctb2saii.htm

Here are some key excerpts

My own TB2s are powered with Bryston Power Pac 120 amplifiers, which are rated very conservatively at 120W into 8Ω. On paper, this should compare well with the old 100W Flying Mole amplifier, but in practice the Bryston easily out-performs it when the going gets tough, so I started my review listening by wiring up a pair of standard Flying Mole amps to my old TB2s instead.

The biggest improvement, though, is the better control, resolution and generous power reserves of the new amplifier module. I think it’s fair to say that the DS001 easily outperforms the Flying Mole amps it replaces, and it’s much closer to matching the sonic performance of the Bryston Power Pac 120s at all but silly levels. That’s impressive: here in the UK, the Bryston PP120 retails for more than two-and-a-half times the price of the DS001 in stand-alone form.

I own the five of the original TB2's and power them with Bryston 4BSST and 6B SST.  The plan was to upgrade in the future to IB1's or IB2's as the those amps are "overkill" for the TB2's.  But the TB2's are in their boxes and the theater not reconstructed yet since I moved.  Also the IB1's (all PMCs!) are way too pricey today.  I suspect when I do get my theater reconstructed, my upgraded speakers will not be PMC's unless I can score a real good deal on three used IB1's.  I digress....

I have used the sonic T amps (closest thing digital) with my TB2's at very very very low levels you really can't tell the difference but any adequate listening level, clean power makes a difference (5w vs 300w).

Thanks for that, ec.  I was going to order the DB1+ when they had the PowerPacs.  After I saved just about enough, they changed over to Flying Mole.  I called my dealer, whom I trust a lot and who knows my tastes in gear, and he said "Don't bother, they're not worth your time."  Several others who I know well confirmed this.  The dealer wasn't out to make a quick buck, as he sold me something for quite a bit less money.   By the time I got to his shop, he dropped the actives.   The passives were, and still are great.

As far as Bryston's price being 2.5 times higher abroad, that's pretty common.  I don't think Bryston is responsible though.

I wish some of you guys knew what you were talking about. The DB1 and TB2 SA's never used Bryston amplification. The new amps in the compact actives are very popular with working professionals... The new IB2XBD-A is featuring new hardware, again, the working professionals who had the great pleasure of hearing it were more pleased with what they heard. I'm sorry a few of you have had less than world changing experiences. We'll have a new system here in Irvine, if you're serious about wanting to hear what we do then give us a call.

I don't know how many people on here have actually heard the new IB2S XBD-A's but the one common comment we got on our open day was how similar they sounded to Bryston power and I know PMC did their best to voice them to match Brystons amps, a job I'd say they have done amazingly well, many of the guys who came in have big PMC/Bryston setups and they were truly impressed with the active IB2 XBD's.

I've already put my request in with PMC for a pair of MB2S XBD-A's based on the same technology, I'd love a fully active pair using Bryston amplification but over here in the UK the price is just a little rich for me unfortunately.

mvwhiting,

I'm genuinely not being a wise-ass...

What amps did the DB1a and TB2a use before the Flying Moles?   I distinctly remember Bryston PowerPacs on the back of them.  I think PP60 and PP120 respectively, but I may be wrong about that part of it.
