Brand new BP-26 doesn't have any output.
« on: 4 Mar 2012, 11:14 pm »
Hello. I already have the Bryston 4B-SST2 amp which I was running with my old NAD preamp. I just upgraded to the BP-26 preamplifier with the outboard power supply and I also got the Bryston DAC and the Bryston Remote control.
The remote control is communicating with the preamp because I can see the volume control going up and down.
The problem is, there is no sound whatsoever outputting to the power amp. I am using the RCA outs to the 4B-SST2. I am trying the "CD" input with RCA interconnects coming from my Sony XA-5400ES SACD player. I also tried the digital out from the Sony SACD player running a digital coax interconnect into the dac and using RCA interconnects into the preamplifier. This also did not produce any sound yet.
I plan to call my audio dealer on my next day off but in the meantime, I'm thinking I must be overlooking some basic setting. BTW: the preamp is not muted. Also, I heard I "pop" when I disconnected RCA output set one and tried RCA output set #2.
Please help :(!

Hi,

I assume the amp has the right inputs selected on the rear panel - RCA or XLR?

Also if you have a set of headphones see if there is any sound using them into the BP26.

Update. Everything is working. For some reason I got no sound initially even though everything was hooked up correctly. Now I'm trying to figure out how to turn the preamp and power supply on and off using the remote control. Do I need to use the trigger system on the back for this? I notice I can turn the dac off and on with the remote but not the preamp.

Hit the PREAMP button on the remote first then the power button on the remote.

James,

I have a BP26/MPS2 and was under the impression that the only things you can control with the BR2 are the volume and mute.  Has there been a new development?

When I hit the preamp, then the power button - nothing happens. I'm a little confused. Does this Remote allow for turning the preamp on and off or not?

Also, I have a question on the merits of leaving the preamp on continuously. Is this a beneficial practice? I have been leaving the power amp on continuously and have been told it does no harm and that sound quality will improve over time. Does the same thinking apply to leaving the preamp on?

Back to the remote control. I like my new gear a lot but to only have volume up & down, mute and phase control of the preamp via the remote, that's a little disappointing considering the price and build quality of the remote control. Power on/off and balance control would be high on my list of essential features. Not moaning but I'm just sayin'  :o

Sorry I was thinking something else - my mistake.

Leaving the preamp on is not harmful and if you turn it off regularly and are going to listen critically I would let it warm up for an hour or so.

Thanks James for your reply.

I am really curious though. Why can you not power the preamp on and off with the remote?

I was under the impression that having the remote and hooking up the trigger wires meant I could power everything on using the remote. Could you explain this?

Thanks, from Bill.

It's a good question - I'd be very interested in the answer, since I'm still weighing the additional cost of getting a remote.

Hi

The MPS power supply turns the BP26 off and it does not have a remote sensor.

I've had my 26 on for at least three years 24/7,no problem.
I use to do the same with my amps, but now I just warm them up for a half hour.
All components on 24/7.I just don't like the hot/cold over and over on the circuit boards, not sure if they like it.
Sides they don't use much power as my amps do 4-7-28's,Torus(s)24/7.
