Most older-style Dubstep should be extremely atmospheric, spacious, with subtle patterns and bass rhythms. Of course Electronic music carries over from genre to genre, but here are some of my favorites:

Burial - Archangel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlEkvbRmfrA
Burial - Raver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGkiUULeDrM
Skream - Rutten: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEmM6vVFrao
Horsepower Productions - Kingstep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS7-dHZIs1s
Horsepower Productions - Damn It: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USKbdr5PJnE
Kode9 - 9 Samurai: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMaVq-_Ta-w
Benga - Middle Man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCqKJL3GX5E

These aren't the oldschool tracks, just some of my favorite Dubstep tracks. But checkout the early tracks by Horsepower Productions, Skream and Benga, as they helped define/kick-start the genre around 2008 and onward.

I like those better than most I've heard, I still don't groove to it much though. I enjoy that I can hear the dub though! I will keep sampling though...

Nice AB hadn't heard that one yet...if only I understood German.  Some of the related videos are good too, looks like I have something to entertain me for a night at work.

I actually preferred DrumNBass to dubstep.  I think Dubstep took quite a few of its elements from DNB.

Yep.  DnB predates dubstep by quite a while, and with the relatively recent trend towards minimalism in DnB, it is coming back around solidly.

But aside from some of Burial, Benga, and Intex Systems stuff I've heard, I can't say I like dubstep.  Never been a big fan of the wobble.

As for electronic music on good systems, it can serve as a good test of resolution and spacial features.  Also, one of the things I appreciate is that since there is no one way that electronic music should sound, I can play the same track with a variety of different systems and have it sound great on all of them, just in different ways.

I like a lot of his stuff. Something different that has brought me back into electronic music. I got really tired of how repetitive so much of it was.

I think that his background in a metal band (albeit a really aweful one) is part of were that agressiveness in his sound comes from. He's not the first to use an oscilator for bass tracks but he is the only one I can think of who makes the bass line sound like it's talking.

I also must recommend the Chemical Brothers, and the crystal method. Probably two of the most commercially successful acts that actually have distinct songs with out the repetitiveness that even oakenfold tends to have.

I forgot I have Prodigy: Fat of the Land up there on the rack, but they aren't Dubstep. Also, I have Massive Attack, their one big album, can't remember.

Ok this EP has not left my player yet, it is just so damn good. This is really good music, on par with anything, probably some of the hardest groove I've ever heard, it's satisfying in that same way of really good heavy rock, except it hails from space.

I couldn't wait to wake up and crank it!

Just a few tracks shy of a full album, I rate it 5/5 masterpiece. Don't hesitate.

Great thread Mr. Clark!  :thumb:
The song that broke my dubstep cherry was not only the song, but the video you linked in your first post.
On a very large screen, cranked up very loud, that video will make an impact on a guy. Most powerful.

Like......big time.

I'll be needing to get more dubstep...ie: Skrillix.... in my library. Soon.

Bob

p.s. By the way.... I do actually like the Skrillex/Korn videos that I've seen.

You're not too far off from where I am with this stuff Bob. The Bangarang cd should only be $6, which is an awesome value because it's a long ep. And there is quite a bit of variety in the music, he dedicated the ep to his recent world tour and so it's kind of a sampler of different types. the last track is lighter, more introspective.

really musically sophisticated, this is not some punk with a drum machine.

and when he lets loose with a hard groove, it gets your brow all furrowed

Bob, you'd don't remember all the Skrillex we listened to at about 115db when Andy was here?

Ryan, oh yea!!! I remember that, no doubt. Andy had shown me the video that RClark linked to a couple weeks before you played it on your system. I remember Ken standing in the back of the room with his fingers in his ears at the time.

RClark, With eight 15" drivers, it's pretty intense, for sure.  :thumb:

Some more great dub step: James Blake. Much more in the vein of dub step as described by highfilter.

Beautiful cover of Feist's Limit to Your Love:

Entire album has great fidelity; very harmonic/melodic:

Has to be Bob!

I've got a friend coming over tonight who's a huge music fan (we both like the same sort of rock music), who's never heard a hifi stereo before, and I'm actually going to kick things off with a few tracks from this ep, just because the sounds are so intense. Should break in his ears quick.

Kinda want to pull out the sub, but I haven't used it in over a month now because the planar bass is just soo much better. New, better subs still in the que.

Btw thanks to everyone posting music in this thread. I haven't had a chance to sample all if it but I intend to   :thumb:

Dammit. Ok, let me crawl around a find out how to make this thing least offensive. He probably won't hear the poor integration like I will.

Exactly. I was going to say that, in fact I even typed it. But it looked offensive like I was saying you didn't know how to integrate a sub, so I deleted it.
But I know what you mean about making something work on short notice when you've got company coming over.
Yea, he won't "hear" what you hear, so hook it up, crank it up, and blow his head off.  8)
