Can you point me to some of the shootouts? I couldn't find them through Googling.

I can't seem to find them now. I read  reviews and build your own studio posts which talked about these over other choices. Also about the famous Yamaha white woofer cone speakers so many albums were recorded with and how that gave pop that mid forward sound as engineers struggled to get mids out of the Yamaha's. Fun stuff. If i run across them I will post them up.
