KRK R6 passive studio monitors
« on: 4 Feb 2012, 04:26 am »
Been using the KRK R6 passive monitors on my desktop near field and they just kick!
I would guess my listening distance is 3' to 4' and I am driving them with the big old Kenwood KR-6600 and the sound is  8) peachy! They are not my venerable Omega Super Five or Sjofn Clue but they are very true to source. I completely understand why folks use these in their mix studios. Makes them cheerful.
About the price of a cheap IC.
$120 each.

It looks like their's two versions on this speaker, one with a highly curved front, and one with a more square front baffle.  Which one are you using?

My speakers are the curved baffle.
Having a large desk is a prerequisite. I am tempted to set them on stands in front of me and surround both sides my Imac,
The main reason I gave these a try was the sound of my KRK KNS 8400 cans. It is so pure and true to source.
As with the cans the break in is significant but not painful in the least.
Listening to Jerry Garcia and David Grisman ( The Pizza Tapes on MOG)  via my Schit Asgard now with the 8400 and the eeriness of Gracias heavy breathing is captivating and clearly a part of this listening experience.

Thanks very much for the impressions.

Imagine what an active version (killer dynamics, ruler flat frequency response, and unbelivably deep/full bass) would be like.

And honestly KRK are very average studio monitors.

Being active in itself is no guarantee of great sound.  I had the powered KRK Rokit 5 G2 and felt the bass was a little boomy, the midrange overly boosted and the treble a bit harsh.

I compared side by side with the Yamaha MSP3, kept the Yamaha, returned the KRK and never looked back.  Perhaps the more expensive KRK VXT series improves upon the marginal drivers and amplifiers of the Rokit series?

MOD
Please delete this thread!

Can not do it myself!

Another cheap and cheerful thread bites the dust to compete with affluent competition! BY NATURE US POOR CHEAP AN CHEERFUL BROTHERS  HAVE A BULLSEYE ON OUR BACKS FOR THE PLATINUM BULLIES!
Did I say I have two in college which limits my ability to compete with the big guns.

Let me add the investment I have made into my children's education has driven me to being second rate to all of the big egos and I am only able to invest in value products. And their $200k college investment was the best I have ever made!~
Having average daughters education was not an option but having "And honestly KKK are very average studio monitors." was my only option.
Done with this! I am so saddened by all of the egos out here. Why can you not leave it alone. :duh:

Not sure why you're having a problem.  I replied to a comment that said the active version would be even better by saying, in my experience, not necessarily so.  If the active electronics are not up to par, they could be worse than a passive version with an external amp.

In my own scenario, I replaced a $150/each KRK active monitor with a $150/each Yamaha active monitor.  I replaced Cheap and Cheerful with better (to my ears) Cheap and Cheerful.

Sorry to rain on your parade (I did say thanks for posting).  I'm just coming out of paying for college for my two and now saving for retirement so I know where you're at. I'm also a single driver user and as such am a huge fan of active designs.

Here's an active system for $1k:

JBL LSR2325P ($400/pair MSRP): http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/General/Product.aspx?PId=280&MId=5

Oppo BDP-93 ($500 MSRP): http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-93/

Add interconnects (studio monitors can work well on shelves/etc.).  My favorites are low cost and custom from Scott Endler:  http://mysite.verizon.net/vze4c5pt/id6.html

IMO this is the basis for a damn nice system.

If you push the budget by $300 the bigger JBL LSR2328P can fill a small room nicely or add the matching sub for $400.  Down the road you could also mod the Oppo and/or add a pre-amp for more inputs.

A couple things.  One, I think tabrink is being factitious with the over the top response, no matter the basic sentiment being real.  Regardless, I'm pretty sure everyone can modify their own post to their heart's content.  Two, thanks srb and JLM for the excellent replies.

Getting back to the KRK R6 passive monitors, looks like there's a pretty big modification to the cabinet for it maintain the same model designation, the curved baffle is the new production I assume?  I know nothing of the company or the speaker, but looking at a couple of web pages it looks like they cater mostly to the DJ clientele and have been around since 2004.  Anybody with additional info or thoughts?

KRKs are pro audio speakers owned by Gibson Guitar. The two pictures are of the original and second generation or G2 as KRK calls it. The curved fronts are the second generation.

As far as how they sound I don't know. I have never heard them nor have I heard a pair of their powered speakers. It would be interesting if one of the publications did a shoot of out these, JBLs, Emotiva, and some other pro monitors against each other and some audiophile speakers.

The M-Audio BX5a's are the king of the heap in the small powered monitor market according to most shootouts and reviews. I am continuously searching ebay, etc. for a killer deal on them as I record our band in my basement. But they are very expensive (to me).

You should be able to compare at a Guitar Center or Sam Ash store if you have them in your town.

Hey JLM those JBL's sound pretty good?? I have seen those for the past year or so and had them on my wish list.

I just lucked into a pair of Bamboo A5+ powered monitors that I'm putting in a system (I think) for my sons graduation present....its even got a remote. They will be tough to look at without being tempted to set them up and check them out. I may need to listen to them for a few months to make sure I got him cool speakers...LOL....chances are good that they may become part of a desktop system for me....hehehehehe....I love the look, the remote, the other options I just don't know what they sound like....anybody heard A5+ speakers by AudioEngine ?? 8)

Oh and for me I liked the KRK's I heard at a Guitar store near me...almost bought some in fact....but the A5+'s jumped in....

Can you point me to some of the shootouts? I couldn't find them through Googling.

I love my Ferrari Red KRK Rokit RP6's.  I have them connectied directly to my Emu 1212m PCI.  I picked them up for $299.98 for the pair on sale about 18 months ago.  The combination playing FLAC via Wasapi and Fubar makes a great office system.

One of these days I'll add a matching Project Debut III turntable.

Now that changes the whole picture.  Why would anyone buy them in anything but the Red, Ferrari or otherwise?  Turns the bland, mismatched black boxes into eye candy.

At one point in time they made them in yellow. Google them and you'll see lovely yellow KRKs.
