Hey!

This is a big one.... at least for some like me who started out in photography back in the old day of film.  :(

http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2012/01/19/eastman-kodak-files-for-bankruptcy/

The ironic thing about this that Kodak invented the digital photography.

The photography world have changed so much the past decade. It is much less of a "physical medium" now. But look like Kodak will still be around but I'm pretty it won't be the same.

First it was Kodachrome to disappeared... but I hope in my heart that Tri-X will still be around.  :?

Well, look like it is a good time to stick a roll or two of Tri-X in my film camera and take it out for a walk, stop by camera store pick up a bag of D-76, Fixer and etc.  :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

It ain't my fault, honest!  I tried!  :P  Apparently that box of TMAX sheets and like a dozen rolls of 120 plus a bottle of TMAX developer wasn't a big enough capital injection to pull 'em back from the abyss.  Doh!

It was only a matter of time. Hopefully Illford & Fuji don't suffer the same fate.

Hey!

If I remembered correctly Ilford did filed bankruptcy a few years back.

So far Fuji is the only old film company that is successful juggling between traditional film and digital, and they seem to do well on both.

Unfortunately I'm not a fan of Fuji's B&W films, but I do like their color film line. :D

Take care,

Bummer, I didn't know that. I'm guessing they're still kicking though, I can still get their products.
Same for me, I dig the Fuji color stuff but the Ilford b&w is the beesknees. I really liked Agfa color film too, I wish they were still around.

Goodbye Kodak....While Fujifilm could have had the same fate...they decided to diversify a long time back and the executives at Kodak sacrificed the company in the long term in order to pad their books for a couple of years...they had no guts to do what was right for the long term.  It is a shame and the workers and photo buffs will pay for it.

Hopefully, it is only the Kodak portion of the Eastman group as indicated by comments here. If it is Eastman, who are one of, if not the largest chemical producers for industry in the US, we are headed for a death spiral. GM got a gimme loan from Uncle Sam; Eastman will almost certainly not. If Eastman goes, it could be the crushing of a cornerstone of the house of cards we call industry in the US today.

Hey!

Well, instead of starting a new thread about Kodak. I will just put this another sad news or some will say... "another nail in the coffin" for Kodak's film.

http://rochesterhomepage.net/fulltext?nxd_id=394722

It is a sad news for me, although I have to admit that I'm guilty of not using film much lately myself.  :?

I checked B&H site and noticed that there are no slide film from Kodak listed there now, but there are some from Fuji... even that is it very limited. Negative films still have good selection from Kodak and Fuji. On another hand B&W selection still looks good with Kodak and Ilford.... and surprisingly there are other brands also.

I don't buy color film anymore, but still shoot B&W film once in a while. So, it is see there are still good selection of B&W films around.  :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Wow times have changed. Kinda sad in a way. I still have my dad's old kodak camera from around the 50's-60's.

I've been meeting a lot of 20something kids (up to 30s) shooting film. some for fun some are Photography majors in Art colleges. So film is still alive. Thankfully. They have inspired me. But I am still looking for the right film camera, myself. having developed film and printed B&W, I enjoy the digital age. I am 46yr. FWIW.

And I currently have two 35mm film cameras. and 5 digitals.

RIP Dad  :(
....

Hey!

   Cool! 50's stereo/3D camera :D

Well, thanks to google, seems like this one take 35mm film. So, if the shutter still work why not put a film in it and see... although the lab will hard a hard time try to figure out how to print the roll due to different frame size and etc.

If you still have pictures form that camera that your dad took, keep them and pass them on in your family.

Hey!

You know the irony with this is that Kodak were experimenting with electronic image capture using CCD, an early form of digital photography in the early '70s. But they never go beyond that because film was still king back than. Think of what they could have become if they actually did something with that... a giant sensor maker today?

I do, still in the metal tubes. If they could still be developed after all these years that would be awesome. I also still have his Kodak instamatic M70 projector in the box with movie type film rolls. Hasn't been opened since 1970. The last time I saw those films would have been in the 60's.

Hey!

Yes, once in while I will see young and older people with film camera.... I do see some at places like museums, park and downtown here in NYC. I once got a stop by what seems like a 20's something girl and her boyfriend at MoMA asking about my Rolliecord camera. And not just young people but also got into some nice conversations with older folks too also when they see me with old film camera. :D

Well, it is not too late to put those film cameras of yours into action. :D

Hey!

Found something interesting about Kodak and the decline of film use....

http://www.technologyreview.com/news/426323/you-press-the-button-kodak-used-to-do-the-rest/

This article is from December 2011 so it is not new. But still interesting to see the turning point on the graph.

And from there here's an article last year from CNN iReport "Kodak Moments' Remembered"...

http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/11/us/kodak-moments-remembered

Included some of readers sharing their own submitted "Kodak Moments" Pretty neat to see and read.  :D

Take care,

I'm surprised that it's as early as 2002/3 that digital cameras overtook film. Hm, but, well, now that I think about it, I did already have a digital camera then  A Canon 2MP, still got it somewhere  :o

Film used to be easier than digital is now. Maybe I was less fussy in those days. Just drop the roll off and an hour later you've got prints. Need a larger one, just tell them the number. No mucking around with post processing, printer inks, clogged jets, backup drives, etc etc.

I don't print out photos anymore - just send 'em or post them electronically.   8)

Sad that we never see ourselves as dinosaurs.  Evolution favors the small and adaptable.
