unlike those thumpy little cars i find them to be ascetically pleasing SANSUI BA 3000 POWER AMP TEST although he could find a better preamp

Those meters are hypnotizing for sure. Here is one for GAS Ampzilla.

I think they look great even though they don't do anything.  Search for "VU Meter" on eBay and you will see many choices.

Can I ask an honest question, Why? Why does anyone care about a useless meter that doesn't really tell you anything important? It's basically just bling like those guys everyone loves that go rolling down the road at 2am with neon effects and spinning hubcaps. I mean seriously they serve absolutely no purpose.

Just as amps vary, so do the meters and what they reflect.  This article does a nice job discussing that: http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/manufacture/0808/

My 23 year old Tube Research amplifiers had bias meters on them. Big 3 inch analog meters made by Weston, probably for the military.

I'm not a fan of a VU meter on anything other than a mixing console.

These came up from doing a search on Ebay for VU panel meters under Business & Industrial...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Panel-VU-Meter-Driver-Board-Warm-Back-Light-Recording-Audio-Level-Amp-/320773194767?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aaf92840f

Just an example, there are a plethora of different styles and pre-built driver boards. I may have to make a "neatometer" box with a current & volt meter included.

He has a lot of nice videos there showing off his meters.

I too loved the McIntosh meters.
