with about 20 db of gain to kick up the LFE level coming out of my Pioneer 563a.  Any ideas on something inexpensive, like for $30-40?  Any simple DIY projects that'll do this?

You might want to post this in the lab- anything DIY will get a lot more reads there than here.  I don't know of anything you could buy prebuilt for that money, but JohnR or MGalusha are pretty handy with DIY'ing.  I'd ask them.

This gadget might do the trick:

A bit more elaborate than you want but it's useful and cheap. Will need a mod to get more gain, I'll have a look at the circuit.

Another option: http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/ampl/k100.htm

It offers 20dB of gain and has tone controls. Not quite as elaborate of bass management as the kit John listed but not bad for $20. Don't forget you will need a power brick and some kind of case of it (or not ;)) I have purchased from these folks before with zero problems.

That K100 preamp kit looks like it will work.  Thanks!
