casters for hifi cabinet?
« on: 7 Jan 2012, 11:28 pm »
I didnt know where to post this question so i chose here because i have what i think is refferd to as a HIFI system by some of the classier elements.  my 2 channel system consists of an Outlaw Audio ss power amp model 750, a tube preamp i built from a kit and a Cambridge Audio 740c CD player and VMPS RM2 speakers.  I am working on some new cabinets for all of my av/computer stuff.  My question is this,  what do you guys think of having the cabinets on casters - the effect on the sound? other concerns - earthquakes?

Good idea (better than messing up your back or making wrong connections or damaging connectors).

Purists will cringe.

Look for casters with that lock the rollers in place if your worried about earthquakes.

Typical advice is to spike if on solid (concrete) floors, otherwise add some sort of compliant (squishy) pad.

If you have a (substantial enough) earthquake, the least of your worries would be if your EQ rack has slid across the floor.

That being said, a very good friend of mine is in the business of selling casters.....should you happen to need any.

I have a Salamander rack and adding the aftermarket casters was the best damn thing I ever did for the rack and my back.  I say, go for it.  Promptly ignore anyone who tells you that casters will ruin the sound of your system.
