Single-Ended amps

Hi Guys,

After hearing a DIY ribbon speaker, I have definitely got the ribbon bug and the VMPS speakers look very, very interesting although I have never heard one. I was amazed at the speed, purity, detail and total lack of coloration of the all ribbon speaker.

My company is the distributor of WAVAC Audio Lab SET amps from Japan with amplifier models ranging from 10-150w/ch.

Does anyone have experience with the different VMPS speakers using SET amps - specifically 50w SET amps? We are looking for a speaker for the next CES as well as for our reference system. Speaker impednace is important for SET amps.

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

Rupesh (dealer in NYC) uses a 30 wcp SET amp to power the mid/tweets, he uses a Spectron on the bass though.  Maybe he'll chime in.

I used a 100wpc Cary V12 (parrelled SETs) to power my Rm40s for a while but felt in the end it was underpowered to run then full range.

I've used a pair of Decware Zen Amps and Cary 572's to power the upper end of my RM2's. I would reccomend something a little more powerful than the Decware but even that sounded great (except at very high volume). I think that ribbons and S.E.T.'s are a great combo as long as you're going to bi-amp.

Tubes on the midrange and tweeter sound awesome, but like others have mentioned, they can't really be used full range on the bigger VMPS models (I also have the RM 40's).

I tried the Kora Cosmos Reference Mono Blocks full range (100 Watts Class A Triode power per mono) and they couldn't do it in my room (25x18x7).

It didn't help that the RM 40's go below a 4ohm load and like lots of current.

Jim,

If you are in Dayton, I am in Fort Wayne, IN, about 2 hours away.  I have the RM40's and 626's.

If you want to come up and listen to mine, you are more than welcome to.

Just PM me and we can work something out.

I have deHavilland 845-G SET monoblocks - 30 w/channel.  They drove my VMPS FF-3s (-3dB @ 24Hz) full range very well.  I now have the RM30s and a Large subwoofer.  The 845-Gs drive the RM30s and a solid state amp drives the Large.  The 845-Gs have phenomenal bass, much better than my BAT VK-75se  and they drive the RM30s full range (-3dB @ 37Hz) with no problems.

The larger VMPS speakers do like a lot of current.  If your amp can supply current; i.e. it has humongous transformers, you should have no problem.  I had problems with certain solid state amps not being able to drive my FF-3s.  The problem was the itty bitty toroidal transformers were too small and could not supply enough current for dynamic passages.

I would definitely haul your amps over to a VMPS dealer and try them out on the RM30s and RM40s.
