app for ipod to control ipad for music playback?
« on: 18 Dec 2011, 02:35 pm »
An odd question I know.

Imagine you have an ipad attached to your stereo.  Now, imagine you want a bluetooth based app to use an iPod Touch to control volume, song being played etc.

Does something like that exist?

Further research indicates that Tango Remote seems to indicate it can do this.

Could be fun!

Get ipeng and playback inside the app. It allows you to stream music to either device from a server so you get the added bonus of being able to listen to ALL your collection including flac files all through either device. On top of those features you can use either drive to control itself, any Squeezebox device, and any other iDevice with the programs installed. I absolutely LOVE ipeng.

iPeng is cool, but it is designed to control Slimserver installs is it not?

I am actually angling for a car audio install - one apple device is hardwired to the amp in the trunk.  The other apple device is in the car itself, and using bluetooth controls the one in the trunk.

May not be possible.

If that's the case then ipeng probably won't work. I believe both devices need to be on wifi.

I have used iPeng, and agree, I think for this (wacky) install, it won't suit.

Thanks though!

Remote would work if there was wifi.  But based on some of the comments made on the site around that app, it does not include bluetooth support.

Still have not had the chance to test Tango Remote, but will report back once I have.

come to think of it, what i really don't get is why you want to put the ipad in the trunk?

The most odd thing about the car system will be that it has no head unit.  Those are pretty rare.  I want to leave the 1969 interior looking stock.  I will put gear in the trunk.  I can use an iPod Touch connected to the amp in the trunk to provide music for the system.  The hard part is reaching from the drivers seat to the trunk to change the volume or the song!

If I can get another iPod to control it with an App, then I will have bluetooth wireless control over my other iPod in the trunk.

that makes sense. a lot of the above systems seem to use a mobile hotspot, so maybe not as kluge-y as i thought?

I think I have stumbled over a hardware solution for my specific needs.

Audioengine makes a toy that streams music wirelessly from an iPod to a receiver that can plug into a stereo etc.  This particular one includes volume control from the iPod, and is based on a 2.4Ghz local network it generates.

Cool toy for $100.
