Shure SRH-840's
« on: 5 Dec 2011, 06:41 am »
I've had the headphones for a little over a week or so (SLOWEST shipping I've ever seen in my life! thanks Amazon!!!) and played an FM rock station thru them at a louder than normal volume for 3 days straight before I even put them on my head. So far I love the sound of these (much better than my 40 buck Sony's!) and the bass is solid to boot. I'm actually listening to Model500 thru them now, no complaints.
Thanks to all of you guys that helped me pick my $150 or less headphones as I am satisfied. :thumb:

I did this simple mod and it opened the phone a bit more and took the veil off ...
I cut the form from the ear-pads ... almost like listening to the speakers with the grills off ...

It worked great for 840s and not so for 940s ...

In any case you have a spare - in case you want to go back ...

Or just enjoy what you already love :)

Cheers

A headlamp is a light attached to a band that you wear around your head around your forehead.

A headAMP is short for headphone amp.

Pez's is animated (nice!!!) and much smaller but if he wants me to change it I'm quite sure I can oblige him...

Pez is not the person being confused when seeing a post by someone else with his avatar on it...

Does it have to be complicated? You're new here, and you know you have an avatar that is very similar to someone else who is very well known and has been here for years and years....

actually I didn't know until after the fact and it's an avatar that I use on other sites as well but if it confuses you to this point then I'll un-complicate it just for you!!!!  :thumb:

Like the new avatar.

Yeah funny coincidence that you had an avatar of someone very well known here. Check out his great coverage of RMAF for example.

Hi, I have been thinking about buying this phone for a while. Your post is very helpful. Anyone know how srh840 compares to Denon D2000? Thanks.

I had D2000 for a short time and I found it to be bass heavy and colored ...
840 on the other hand was so enjoyable and very well balanced  ... I regret selling it ... I did a simple tweak which worked wonders for me ... I cut out the sock / fabric on the earpads - it had the same effect as listening to speakers with grills off ...

On a few words, the Denons are more fun to listen to. Some people find the Shures to be boring, but this is a matter of taste.

A lot depends on the genre or music one listens to ...
Example: Grados are considered as Rock phones and also great for vocals but they fall short in classical due to small soundstage and less 3D ...

Often relatively uncolored phones are considered boring ... they may not grab your attention immediately ...

Also we all have different listening preferences ... who knows, perhaps we all may hear things differently ... all have have different physical outer and inner ears -- who knows what journey sound / music takes and how it is perceived / processed by the mind that gives us joy or lack there of ...

Cheers

saisunil,

I'm curious what you meant when you said you "cut the form from the ear-pads." Did you mean the material that stretches across the pad and covers the driver?  Thanks.
