Picture of the Coupla Weeks Ago
« on: 2 Dec 2011, 06:10 am »
I got my film back from the lab today and it's just about a miracle; 5 rolls of Ektar 100 with all 50 shots technically OK.  That isn't to say each one is an artistic winner, but I'm still impressed I didn't cock up more of them.  So far this one is my favorite, or at least it has to be on account of the 'ol G4 screaming for mercy and not having enough hours in the day to work on more.  It got so bad I broke down and merged my layers. *sigh*

Dood.........  :dunno:
You start a thread and talk about having 50 shots, but you show two?

 :nono:

Man up. Bring on the photographic porn.
Plus, give specs, numbers, details, stuff......damn. You leave me feeling.....so.... lonely.
You bring up so high, then drop me like....you don't even care.

Thanks very much guys!  Believe me Bob, if I could work faster I would!  It takes me a few hours to choose, clean, mount, scan and Photoshop each shot. I'm working on a Mac G4 and it's doggin'

This series is all shot with a Mamiya RB67 camera on Kodak Ektar 100 color negative film (120 6x7).  I have 50, 90 and 250mm lenses.  (So far, the 90mm and the 2nd and 3rd are with the 250) Scanned with Epson V750 Pro scanner, oil mounted direct to the glass with Kami mounting fluid.

I must not have stopped down on account of the wind blowing stuff around and wanting a faster shutter speed, cause the mid and background are a little soft.  No forward tilt for you! :dunno:

Are you saying......what I think you're saying?  :o Certianly not?

Anyway, step it up with the pretty stuff. You've been dry for a couple hours now. Where's the next picture?

Thanks N.

Hmm…I'm not sure what you think I'm saying, but I am eager to know if I am missing something obvious.

Well, when you say you're scanning pictures, I get a mental image of the times I've scanned pictures.
It's a pretty boring process.

But when you said you used an oily fluid directly on the glass of the scanner, that shatters my knowledge of the things you can do to a scanner.

So do you see why I used these guys --->  :o

Ahh, gotcha.  Basically the film is sandwiched between a piece of clear mylar and the glass of the scanner bed with fluid inbetween.  This basically makes the rays of light not bend so much.  Here's a more sciencey way of putting it, from a microscopy web page:

Quote from: Microscopy with Oil Immersion
When light passes from a material of one refractive index to material of another, as from glass to air or from air to glass, it bends. Light of different wavelengths bends at different angles, so that as objects are magnified the images become less and less distinct.

…Placing a drop of oil with the same refractive index as glass between the cover slip and objective lens eliminates two refractive surfaces…

Kinda like how your car's finish looks better when it's wet.  This attractive lady can explain it better than I can:

I don't have an Eversmart or use the anti-newton glass, but it's the same basic process.

Wow, cool. Most interesting.
So....It's all about protecting the original image as opposed to altering it. I suppose one could get creative with types of oils and actually get a little "post processing" effect?
I'll watch the video later when I've got more time.

Thanks for the explanation, sorry for the OT.

Bob

p.s. Oh...By the way, where's the next bit of eye candy?

Nathan, what kind of shutter speed and aperture are you using in the 3 photos you've shared so far?  I like how your subjects really pop.  Thanks.

Nah, it's pretty much just clear fluid.  Effects are much better done with Photoshop.  The Kami stuff I've got now is great because it evaporates.

Viggen, it depends.  Whatever the light meter tells me.  I use the depth-of-field preview lever on the lens to help decide what ƒ-stop I want. The more closeup stuff with the 250mm lens I do remember, that was ƒ5.6 at 1/400th most likely.  The grass was blowing around a lot and would be too motion blurred otherwise.

Hey!

Oooooooh.... Film!  8) Your film scans look great. I wish I had a good scanner.

Anyway, I like pic on the #8 post. That is a very pretty place. I also like the pic on the above post but only the bottom half of it  :D

Talking about film I still have some frames I would like to to get them scan and also a few rolls of B&W film that I haven't get around to develop  :icon_lol:

Take care,
Buddy  :thumb:

Hubba.

When I read "roll" in the first post I was like what? But it's cool. I'm OK now.

You don't seem to have lost much by having no tilt.

I'm probably not going to shoot any more color film in large format, it's too expensive to process and I'm not THAT big a fan of color images.  But when I was researching what the Mamiya 250mm lens looked like this picture compelled me to get some color film: (sorry, he's got it copyrighted and I can't link to it directly)
