If I remember correctly, the Bel Canto dacs will allow ht bypass and can function as a full preamp.  I have a 2.5.

These come to mind:

Benchmark DAC1Pre
PS Audio PW DAC
Berkley Alpha DAC
Bel Canto's DAC1.5, 2.5, 3.5VB

While these units may all have preamp/volume control functions, I think only the Wyred DAC-2 and Bel Canto 2.5/3.5 have HT Bypass inputs?

I'm not sure if it has HT bypass or could be configured with such, but check out the Van Alstine Vision Pre/DAC.

These are preamps first, DACs second.. but still fits the bill.

McIntosh C48/C50
*believe it has a 12v trigger to enable passthru
*users have reported issues with the usb input on the dac
Classe CP-800
*believe this is remote only
SimAudio Moon 350P
*believe this is remote only

The peachtree nova had HT bypas and the new grand-pre as well.  I don't think the new nova (not out yet) will have it though.

The AVA Vision DAC/Preamp does indeed have a $50 HT Bypass option available.  www.avahifi.com

Bryston SP2 has a bypass function.

Bryston SP2 has a bypass function.

I believe the SP2 has an analog bypass to bypass any digital signal processing.  HT Bypass is a special input to allow bypassing of a preamp's volume control when connecting an AV Processor and using its volume control.  Since the SP2 is an AV processor, this type of input wouldn't apply.

Doh :duh:

Just got my SP2 hooked up today and am still reading thru the manual.  I only run stereo but wanted the DAC and the ability to decode DD and downmix from my cablebox (Won't output PCM from the digital out).

Bryston's BP16-DA preamp
*optional remote required to configure (or use rs-232 input)
*I believe the DAC works only up to 96/24 files.
Modwright LS-100 Tube Preamp
*Front panel operation.

Does anyone know what chip the new Bel Canto DAC's use? I can't seem to find that info anywhere.

The Bel Canto 1.5 and 2.5 use the Burr Brown PCM1796 and the 3.5VB uses the Burr Brown PCM1792.

The Warpspeed Optocoupler, an apparently excellent sounding newer LDR passive volume control can do a HT bypass. The designer has configured it so that bypass happens on a second input while the unit is powered off. This is a fantastic option for those like myself who wish to run a dac direct to amp for maximum transparency but who also need to integrate an AV receiver into the system.

A future model with 3 inputs and two paralleled outputs (bi amping or sub output) is to be released, along with a remote volume control unit.

srb, thanks for the info on the chips!

clearlight, thanks for the info on the Warpspeed, I send a message to the designer (?) to see if I can get some more info on these.
