Play nice. No need for the PC vs Mac crap that's readily available elsewhere on the net. Next post that strays off topic gets canned.

but for a vendor to insist the best solution is for the user to roll back their operating system is asinine.

Most of my clients use their Macs to do paying work. If Lion doesn't run some essential tool, then it is useless to them. Would mean a tool that provides their livlihood broken.

7 is great at some things and OSX is great at some (other) things....why not just enjoy the best of both and dual boot?

That's what I do with a laptop (Dell Mini 9) and the silent i3-based music-only computer that I built.

woops, wasn't trying to set off a battle here (what is this a power cord discussion  ). actually i think that with the improvements in win7 that the two systems are more alike than different. pick your favorite flavor.

got the mini set up last night (well not for music yet but for all else) and so far so good. will start to jump in to pure music when the usb dac arrives (short term solution HRT streamer, eventually schiit bifrost).

Ratso,

Did you decide to go with SL or Lion on your 2011 Mac Mini?

Andy Rooney's take on how Bill Gates screwed up the computer.

even though Andy's a bit off on blaming BG for the physical design of PCs that used Windows software, this is just too damned funny

hey darrell! i decided it was WAY easier/safer just to stay with lion. actually it was some of your quotes in the other thread that made my decision easier, as you seemed to indicate it would work out ok. have you guys run into any problems with downgrading on the 2011 mini's or has it even come up for you?

from another thread just posted on here, it looks like lion to snow leopard is a definite no go on 2011 minis.

I have a mid-2010 mini and a new mini w/ Lion. I spent a couple of hours trying to set-up a dual-boot drive with Lion and SL and had no luck. Nothing I tried, booting off of family SL 5-license disk, targeted drives, etc, worked. After spending the next day researching the issue it seems to be a problem of drivers, etc., that will not let SL fly on a Lion shipped mini.

yep check out that linked thread in "which 2011 mini" thread http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29318
and read it to the end. it seems that even if you can get leopard to boot onto lion (very difficult but possible) there are still other obstacles/drawbacks/itdon'tworkallthathot to deal with. not really worth it IMO. i have had no problems/complaints with lion so far BTW.

Yoder,

Its not easy to put Snow Leopard on the 2011 Mac Mini's but it can be done.  The 3 Mach2 Servers mentioned by Steven Stone, at the RMAF were all 2011 Mac Minis with Snow Leopard.

But, it is incredibly difficult and for the folks taking the DIY route, I suggest just sticking with Lion on the 2011 Macs.  It will save you lots of cussing and brain aches.

No Integer & HOG.   :(  I've already sent me request to Apple.

Another reason why I  my '09 Mini with Snow Leopard.

One could also install Parallels/VMware Fusion app and then install Snow Leopard and there you have your Integer and HOG working just fine. I did the same on my laptop running Lion.

i'm glad you were successful, but in the linked thread others had problems:

"Have also tried the VMware Fusion virtualization route which have resulted in the 2011 mini having kernel panics upon loading the SL disc."

proceed with caution? also of note is that for those who got lion to run, bench testing seems to indicate a performance drop off.

Didn't experienced any 'performance drop offs' at all. Running fine since September. Anyway, YMMV as they say...

The problem with Lion seems to be if one is using a USB external DAC. I am using FW and Lion with Amarra works great. If I run the TOSLINK into an external word clock and then the DAC, I also have great audio. One of my mini's is still running SL, and is using a USB external DAC. I prefer both Lion configurations over the USB.

FYI: Just read where Apogee, MOTU, and a couple of other audio device manufacturers are starting to design components using Thunderbolt. One of them said they will use Thunderbolt on the higher-end components and continue using USB for a while on the lower-end consumer components. The beauty of TB is that you can daisy-chain it like FW. I have one mini with 4-FW devices, and my MBP has 6-FW devices hooked-up. Both set-ups feed into the one port. USB on the other hand would need 6 ports for my one configuration.

Very good news. It should allow a whole new generation of devices with higher sampling rates.... 32/768 anyone?

Well, with the spare time I had on my hands this weekend I was able to get SL to run on my 2011 mini. I started by installing it from my MBP to an external FW800 hard drive. I then booted up in target mode and did all of the updating of the OS. I then plugged the HD into the mini and used target mode again, and it booted up with no issues at all. Everything ran as expected. Next, I will clean-up the OS for audio, partition the mini SSD, and burn an image of SL to move over to the mini. SL does work on the new mini's.
