roll back to snow leopard, seriously??
« on: 4 Nov 2011, 05:16 pm »
is this correct? i have a new mac mini on it's way and ordered a copy of snow leopard also. to roll back from lion on a new mac you need to connect it to another mac?     so now i have to pay someone with another mac to install this? please note this only applies to new mac's. can anyone verify this?

Why would you want to roll back to SL?

most music server builds recommend it. i know some elements of pure music don't work correctly with lion. but if i can't get it to work, i may have to just stick with lion.

What you need is a Snow Leopard installation disc (look on eBay). Reformat your drive and install away. . . the full installation disc, not the upgrade disc.

Yes.

We have lots of clients who prefer to stay with SL. It is solid, Lion likely still needs a few major updates as well. There are also often some mission critical aps that get left behind by Leopard.

If you can boot off the SL disk you can install it. (DVD in, restart holding the C button down). If not, you need to turn the mini into a target mode drive and firewire connect to a Mac that will boot from the SL disk.

I am still on Snow Leopard and think that while there are some nice features in Lion, I see few compelling reasons to update.

Another option, if you have some extra space, may be to set aside about 20GB of HD space on the new computer and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy an existing Snow Kitty install into it. All you need on this partition is the operating system, any SL-only software you need, and some free space for the OS to use (do your saving to the main partition). Run whichever one you want at any given time.

The $29 disc is an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, not the other way around. I upgraded my MacBook from Leopard to Snow Leopard.

from another thread just posted on here, it looks like lion to snow leopard is a definite no go on 2011 minis.

http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29318

i've actually had a mini before, the original one. and i have found that most things i try to do are far easier to accomplish on a pc with win7 than on a mac. IMO one of the biggest myths is "everything is easier on a mac". every time i sit around watching a spinning beach ball as quick time tries to figure out how to play a video clip, i laugh at that. or have to convert flac files to alac. etc, etc.

having said all that (vented all that) i do think that even with lion this should work well as a HTPC for my uses. it's small, quiet, and i can load pure music onto it. it even has hdmi out. we will see.

You cannot downgrade an O.S when installing if the mac came with a later version of the O.S.
IOW, you cannot go from 10.7 to 10.6 if the computer came with 10.7. Try it, you'll get a "nice" kernel panic error.

Similarly if your computer came with 10.6.8 you cannot install 10.6.4.

To install software on a optical drive less mac go here

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777?viewlocale=en_US

You will need another computer (mac or pc with an optical drive) and they must also be on the same network.  There are other ways e.g. target mode or copying the DVD to a USB "stick"

yep, but that article referenced says that there has been further problems even if you get snow leopard on a lion machine. not worth taking a chance on.

If you reformat your drive, there is no operating system. At that point the computer doesn't know, should care less what you decide to install. If I remember correctly, about the time Lion was released, Apple offered a free upgrade to people who had just bought a Mac and didn't get Lion. Everyone else would have to pay $30 for the upgrade.
If you need to go the Snow Leopard route, get yourself a full Leopard install disc and then upgrade to Snow Leopard with the upgrade disc.

Windows 7 is pure plug and play bliss. I fail to see this superiority of a mac other than for personal preference.... Certainly did t think it possible to LOVE windows but I do. And I've been using windows since version 1. Took them long enough, but they nailed it with this one.

The hardware differences between a PC and a Mac are nil. The reason a Mac is superior is because of its underpinnings. BSD UNIX. However the user experience may or may not be preferable.
For most Apple users, a Mac just works. I plug in my printer and it works, I plug in my digital camera and it works, I plug in my scanner and it works, I click on a WiFi hot spot and it works. Network connections are easy to set up or are set up automatically. Everything just works.
Ever since I switched from PCs to Mac I spend much less time fixing my computer and more time being productive.
But you can thank Micro$oft for one thing, If it weren't for Windows, a lot of computer repairmen would be out of work.

Windows 7 "just works" too  :D. Way I see it, both computers, PC just capable of running way more stuff.

But anyway, carry on.

Um, you do know that this is the Apple Core? I don't think anyone needs your permission...  thanks though ;)

Windows 7 is utter crap. You should see how laughably bad Tyson's laptops are running win7. He wants to buy a Mac and he works for HP.  I had to buy a Netbook for my wife for work and the OS is so completely terrible that it verges on unusable. The damned OS is so poorly conceived it just randomly decides 'time for an update jagoff, and no I don't care if your doing something important.'

As far as hardware, are you joking? I hope so I don't recall ever seeing any pc that was milled from unibody aluminum. The best you can hope for is some stamped duraluminum crap with plastic everything else.

So ya 7 just works.... Barely.
