Foobar2000/M2Tech hiFace user needs help...
« on: 2 Nov 2011, 06:35 pm »
I'm hoping there are some M2Tech hiFace USB to SPDIF converter owners out there who can help me with an issue I'm having using the hiFace with Foobar2000 v1.1.8.

For some reason, Foobar will not remember the output device I select (KS: M2TECH hiFace kernel streaming) when I shut down my laptop.  Each time I boot up I have to go into Foobar's preferences and select the output device again.

It was suggested to me on another forum that the drivers may be broke.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If it helps, my laptop is running Vista Home Premium.

Have you try to re-install the driver?
Put the laptop to sleep then see if it does remember when it wake up.
If you remove the HiFace, when you turn on the laptop, will defaut the on-board driver.

Are you using the version 1.03 driver for Windows Vista/Windows7?

If you disconnect the hiFace and bring up Foobar2000, it will drop the audio interface from the list.  It will not bring it back until you reconnect the hiFace and then reselect the KS: M2Tech.

Install the WASAPI component in Fooobar2000 and it will sound better.  It will not work with 88.2KHz SR, but KS will work.

I haven't tried to reinstall the driver yet.  I'll try putting it to sleep and see if it remembers it.

I'll check on the driver version when I get home.  I only recently downloaded it so I suspect I do have the latest version.

My normal procedure when using the hiFace is to first boot up the computer, then connect the hiFace, then open Foobar2000.  When I'm done, I shut down Foobar2000, then remove the hiFace, then shut down the computer.  Is there something different I should be doing?

I chose to us kernel streaming to minimize the load on my laptops resources.  I might try WASAPI and see how well it works for me.

Thank you both for the feedback.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Using your turn on and shut down procedure with my hiFace, Foobar2000 v1.1.8, Windows 7 x32 and x64 hold the soundcard settings in Foobar2000.  Have not tried it with Vista.

I checked the driver, and yes, I'm using the most current version.

After a little experimenting, it seems the problem stems from my bootup sequence.  Instead of the above bootup sequence, this time I plugged in the hiFace first, booted up the laptop, then started Foobar2000.  Using this sequence Foobar had the correct output device set.

Out of curiousity, I tried WASAPI, but I can't say I heard any difference.  I had read that WASAPI uses the cpu more than kernel streaming, but I found it seemed to depend on content.  With some music files, WASAPI used less cpu resources and with others kernel streaming used less,  so I just consider WASAPI vs kernal streaming a wash.

You guys are great.  This forum was much more helpful than the Foobar forum.  Thanks. :thumb:
