But what are your speakers? Choosing an amp needs to involve matching an amp with speakers.

And it may be that you will not find a tube amp in your price range that is a good fit for your speakers if they have certain characteristics (requiring lots of power or due toimpedence issues).

I just stumbled across your post and I am helping a friend right now with more or less the exact same question.  As many have noted you have not indicated the speakers you wish to use which would help considerably.  Nonetheless I would highly recommend this:

It is likely not well known, but is really an outstanding amp, capable of driving almost any speaker with authority.  They provide a small window to return the amp if it really does not suit you but I think upon hearing you will be convinced.  It probably sounds like I represent Musical Paradise (not the case) since this is my first post, but just wanted to spread the word about an excellent amplifier that falls within your stated budget.
