A DIY GHETTO BLASTER
« on: 12 Oct 2011, 05:46 am »
I have always wanted to build a kick ass BOOM BOX that sounds better than the ones available in the box stores. It should have an amp, tuner, c/d player and a MP3 or USB port along with a battery, two disconecting sattelights and a 8 in subwoofer. All of this must fit in an ordinary boom box sized enclosure and be realitivly portable so one can rock out while camping not to far from the car!! Any ideas on suitable components? :drums: :guitar:

What dimensions roughly would you consider an "ordinary boom box sized enclosure"?

Check out the Boomanator thread at DIYaudio for ideas. I would use a 41hz Amp6 Basic module.

Depends on how elaborate you want to get. I'd get a car stereo and a 12V battery. Many have font panel mini jack aux input. You could put some 6 1/2 or 6 x 9 in detachable boxes and drive them with the front channel. Get a dual voice coil sub and hook up each coil to a rear channel and use front/back control to balance.  You'd need a low pass filter for the sub, or drive it with a separate amp. You could even get a car unit with a screen and DVD player if you want.

Great thread. I've been tinkering with this idea for a while.

Something like this:  Cambidge Soundworks Model 12 http://store.cambridgesoundworks.com/Cambridge-SoundWorks-Portable-Speaker-System/dp/B0002DURV2

I had one of these and thought it was just ok sounding but great package.

Great idea about the car radio solution but would need a converter to be able to plug into wall outlet.

Maybe plug into something like this? http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02871486000P?blockNo=1&blockType=G1&prdNo=1&i_cntr=1319205851509&isABTestAvl=true

While I'm sure you can build a better sounding boom box today, there was something more compelling about the classic boom box of yesterday. Here are a few of my favorites :

Any progress Mort?
Sounds like a neat project. One that I've thought about doing myself.

Maybe a SB "Touch", with a chip amp......

Love the idea! Definitely sounds like something the Late Henry Kloss could have pulled off at a good price.

Although, I had a pretty awesome Toshiba boombox I bought new in 1987 for $300 with detachable speakers made out of mdf and a passive radiator. It would totally rock our dorm hall. It took 8 or 10 D batteries and weighted a ton. We had a shoot-out between mine and some preppy dude's more expensive Sharper Image boom box and I crushed 'em by popular drunken vote.

I still have that beast and recently refoamed the speakers. Sadly, it is all black, so it doesn't sport the early 80s silver breakdance, ghetto buster look that Quiet Earth and I prefer.
