Why is SB trying to MAKE ME CRAZY????
« on: 23 Oct 2011, 08:20 pm »

What is wrong???? Why does it insist on putting crap in random places like this? Also it takes a lot of my files in my hi rez folder and scatters them throughout my folders. It's a damned nightmare.

What SB contoller are you using?  i.e., what is that a screenshot of?

Is the sort screwed up only on that controller, or on the Touch, also?

Are you saying you scan your music and it puts stuff all over?  If so, I had the same problem and someone posted to turn off the virus protection which I do now and all is well.  It was driving me crazy too but many would argue that is not too far a drive for me

Are you seeing the same artist sort order in the web interface? If not, it's a problem with whatever user interface you're using.

It's not ipeng it's the sb software for sure. I see it on SB remote, on The web interface, and on the touch itself.

Phil, are you using a Mac? Or the other non-Mac type of computer? Can someone tell me why virus protection would alter anything??? Also do I have to turn off virus protection? I'd hate to have to do that just because the a-holes at Logitech are too stupid or lazy to release a bug fix.

Good info.

If wouldn't.

What types of files are in your library? Do any of the artists that are shown in the wrong spot appear on compilation albums?

How is your library organized? One album per folder, or something else? One file per track or one file per album plus CUE sheets?

Usually when an artist appears out of place it has to do with a misplaced or unseen _SORT tag, such as an ARTISTSORT or ALBUMARTISTSORT field. That doesn't look like it would be the case with the example you show above, as most commonly the artist will be sorted by last name. But it's still most likely an issue with how the files are tagged. Squeezebox Server definitely has some quirks that you need to be aware of, but they're all fairly easy to work with.

You can usually get much better help with this type of problem in the Slim Devices forums:

Pez whenever they screw around with me and throw a glitchy update out its easiest to just go back and reinstall an earlier version that worked well. If the last one you were using was ok but now its fried because you upgraded then just go backward and wait for next release that fixes all the crap they just let loose....the weenies!!!!! :thumb: :thumb:  :rotflmao:

Great info. I'll check the things you mentioned as well as go to the slim forum to figure out all the convenient non-function they programmed for my amusement.

Also any ideas how I can corral my hires files back into the hires folder.

The only time I've had songs land in the "Various Artists" category is due to SB Server not recognizing certain characters in the artist name.  The "Compilations" setting under "My Music" of the Server Settings defaults these particular items to that folder (or whatever you have designated).

Once I edited the file name and rescanned my songs, everything cleaned up nicely.  Can't speak to why you have the numerous "Various" categories unless you changed the default compilation folder at one point.

Good luck!

check the tags

You might try editing the tags and see if they've been corrupted in some way.  For example, if the artist name is different in the different songs then it might confuse Squeezecenter.

If you're running a Windows machine then MP3TAG is very good software for viewing and editing tags.   It's free, although you should consider donating to the developer if you like it.  Take a look here: http://www.mp3tag.de/en/
Hope this helps.

No - I have a Mac (old G5 Tower) but am using an old Dell XPS Windows XP Machine.  I just got a new PC on Friday with 2 hard drives and I have an external USB 3.0 hard drive for it too that I'll eventually install and I'll be migrating and recording stuff on.

I had issues with scanning the library and finding things and being put in weird places.  Someone here posted to turn off the virus protection.  I did and everything went where it should and I then turned it back on.

I have no idea why.

The only reason I can think of is that the scan of the music library isn't actually completing because the anti-virus isn't permitting the database server (MySQL) to create temporary files during one of its passes. You can usually tell if the scan didn't complete by going into the web interface, Settings > Information and examining the scanner.log.

The better way to fix this, instead of disabling the AV, is to configure it to allow *.MYI and *.MYD files to be created. Here's a short thread on the SD forum explaining it:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87451

This would only be an issue with Squeezebox Server 7.5.x and earlier. SBS 7.6 switched from using MySQL to using SQLite for its database functions.

Thanks - next time I scan everything, which might not be for a couple of months, I'll look into that and see if it helps.  I'll have not been ripping lots of things waiting for the new PC which I just got on Friday.  It will take a bit until I get to it.

definitely the tags IMO. i was endlessly fiddling with tags when i had my squeezebox. part of the reason i have now had and sold a SB twice now. i agree with mp3tag, some tags are very difficult to remove/replace. its probably best (easiest) to just remove all tags from the offending cd's and replace them.

As others have said it is the tags on the files. If you did not rip the files, you do not know how they were tagged. You will need to go into each of the files and check the tags and edit them to put them where you want them.

As I know next to nothing about programs for MAC OS, you will have to search out a good tag editor on your own. A quick google search turned up Tag . Give it a try. You need something to do during the day

Get MP3tag, open the misbehaving file, select all, choose View->Extended Tags and feast your eyes on the chaos.

Delete the tags you do not want SBS using to sort your Music.

Repeat.  :duh:

Pez only uses MAC OS. MP3tag will not work for him.

I thought you wanted to fix the problem now. From the tone of the original message it sounds like you're ready to pull your hair out.

Unless you've deleted it, the scanner log should still exist on your system and be viewable. It would tell you whether you're having the problem with the anti-virus blocking MySQL.
