other than Linn?
« on: 19 Oct 2011, 03:07 am »
hi,

I'm looking for upnp hardware audio renderer. I hope this is the right place for my question.

In short, besides Linn streamer, any one know if there is actual product, hardware or software UPnP audio RENDERER, that also support Linn upnp extension for the added features, including gapless playback and renderer local playlist?

Long story:

recently I start to use upnp for networked audio playback. PlugPlayer runs great on iPad. My current setup is:

- controller, PlugPlayer on iPad
- server, foobar2000 upnp server
- renderer, foobar2000 upnp renderer via HDMI audio to my Pioneer receiver

But in this setup there are 2 problems:
- can not do gapless playback between tracks
- must have the PlugPlayer on iPad active and running during the whole listening. If I sleep the iPad, playback will stop after current song

A friend has a Linn hardware audio renderer and don't have the above limitations. I understand Linn has some upnp enhancement. And the upnp extension is open source. But I can't afford a $10k+ Linn hardware!

My question, is there a cheaper (hopefully under $1k) hardware audio renderer which has almost all the function of a Linn box?

I understand squeezebox system does all these for cheap. But I want a upnp setup...

Almost all streaming audio players use UPnP/DLNA, it is the industry standard.
I don’t know if all of them support gapless playback. You have to check yourself as indeed gapless is not supported all of the time and might be limited to audio formats supporting this.

A couple of suggestions:
Cambridge Audio NP30 Network Music Player
HIFIAkademie NetPlayer
Musical Fidelity M1 CLiC
Teac
Yamaha NP-S2000

BTW: any PC running Win7 is DLNA compliant
