SiriusXM + Bryston
« on: 15 Oct 2011, 11:01 pm »
Greetings everyone,
I'm wondering the best way to bring my SiriusXM subscription to my Bryston rig?  I currently have it in my car and love it- especially the jazz stations.  The whole family loves the absence of commercials.  I have the added feature that allows listening on computer and iTouch.

Have any Bryston folks taken this path before me?  Hope you don't mind my posting this question here.  Please feel free to move my post if there is a better place for it.

Thanks.

I use a $100 Airport Express plugged into one of my BDA-1 inputs. Then from my Macbook I use Airfoil to send basically anything playable on the computer or iTouch to the Airport Express (not just iTunes). Works great for internet streams.

Tom,
Thanks very much for the reply.  I have an Apple TV(2) which I could use in a similar fashion.

Depending on the cost, I am looking for the option/solution with the greatest fidelity. I will definitely try your suggestion.

I have SiriusXM in cars, hadn't thought about in the house.  I guess any  Sirius home receiver with spdif/toslink out will work with the BDA-1.  Need to do some research.

Steve,
Last year, I added all computers and iPhones to my (auto) Sirius account for a very nominal fee.  On a Mac, looks like the program Airfoil ($25.00?) allows one to stream almost any audio, not just iTunes stuff.  As recommended in this thread, I am planning on streaming audio from my computers to my AppleTV(2)- this is connected to my BDA-1.

For those who own Airfoil, is it worth the moolah and does it work as it should?

The alternative is to add a second SiriusXM radio to the existing account- and connect this to the preamp.

Headshrinker2. Do you have a BDP-1? If you do, why would a Sirius connection be better than Internet radio stations played through the BDP-1?

I think Airfoil is worth the moolah and works as it should.

The only programs I've found that it can't work with on a Windows PC are (1) music players that are configured to use the WASAPI (and probably ASIO as well) sound driver and (2) Windows Media Center.

Hey Dave,
Yes indeed, I do have a BDP-1.  The internet radio stations I have tried so far sound terrific! In fact, I'm listening to some internet radio right now.

Since I already have the Sirius/XM subscription, my goal is to take advantage of it and bring it to my Bryston gear.  I'm especially fond of the jazz stations.  Some excellent programming- I've been turned on to all kinds of music I probably would not have heard otherwise.

Thanks for the explanation. I had a Sirius subscription, but couldn't justify the cost given that I have a most of my own music on a Classic iPod in my car.

Which Internet stations do you prefer? My favourite Internet station is Dinner Jazz Excursion which has the kind of jazz I like the most, but is interrupted.Fallingstars from Korea has more of a mix, but no interruptions at all. BTW, I bet you don't hear much Lee Morgan on Sirius or Internet stations - another jazz great now under-rated or largely forgotten.

I have Sirius and use a Sonos ZP-90 connected to a BDA-1.  The ZP-90 has the Cullen mod that reduces jitter and it sounds pretty good.  The Sonos also accesses thousands of streaming radio stations, some of which are pretty high quality.  I use the BDP-1 for playing my digital music library.

This seems to be a Jazz crowd but I listen to Classic Rock as well and like 101.1 HD2 | The Classic Rock Channel WJRR out of Cocoa Beach, FL.  WJRR has a JAZZ channel as well.

Hey Dave,
Thanks for the recommendations.  I haven't explored internet radio much yet.

Rupret,
Thanks for the Sonus suggestion.  My kids tell me I've been playing the same CD's over and over again.  Maybe it's time to open my ears to bunch of new/other music.  I'm going to start by learning how to add internet stations to my BDP-1.

Tom,
Airfoil works like a charm.  Thanks again for the suggestion.  Very easy to get up and running.  Streaming Sirius/XM from my laptop to ATV(2) and BDA-1.  Not initially wowed by the fidelity.

I use to have xm/Sirius in the work truck and on the motorcycles, so one day I decided to hook it up indoors through the sp2.  The sound was not very good and I took it back to the shop.  After the last price increase I just dropped it.  I found INTERNET stations sounded much better and did not repeat so much.  Also, much More content I have never heard before.  Thats the way to go for me.

The few internet stations I have heard so far through the BDP/BDA sound terrific.  I definitely need to explore internet radio further.

Just to clarify, are you saying you purchased a Sirius/XM radio and hooked this up through your SP2?  Was the sound not as good as what you have in your truck?
