The amazing HT2-TL's and Bass
« on: 17 Oct 2011, 04:54 pm »
I think I own the very first pair of HT2-TL's Jim produced. I was forced to incorporate them into a combined music-movie setup. Jim supplied a lovely matching center speaker. I never used a sub for music. Recently I acquired a Rythmik F12 and tried it with the HT2-TL's for music. With the crossover at 80HZ and the sub near a side wall, I didn't like what happened to the soundstage. With the crossover at 50HZ, there was an improvement in some tracks which employed real low frequencies. The most important reminder, however, is how wonderful these speakers really are on their own for pure stereo listening.

I think I have the 2nd or 3rd pair of HT2-TL's (I received mine 3-20-09).

While I agree that the bass is very capable with the HT2-TL's, they work MUCH better with an EQ'd subwoofer (or 2 in my case).  I was able to measure down to nearly 20Hz at reference level in my room.

The HT2-TL's are rather easy to over-drive, as I know a few of us that have done so (without any damage).  Now, paired with my subs, this is a completely different story.  The important things are to have high quality subwoofer, proper placement and setup, and EQ'd.  I couldn't be happier with my setup with the subs.  You'd never know the subs were playing other than the clean, deep bass that comes from them.

The Rythmik F12 is a very good subwoofer.  I'd bet anything your issues with it come from poor in-room frequency response.  EQ that sub in the right place in your room, and you'd be saying something completely different.

I don't have the HT2-TLs but the SongTowers. I have a F12SE and use it with the STs for music. I'm listening right now to my system and it sounds excellent. I use an Anti-Mode 8033C to handle the sub EQ duties and it helps quite a bit with blending the F12SE with the STs. Of course as Terry mentions your room and the subs location in that room play a huge factor in the response of the sub.

You're just saying that because you have a similar setup. :D

My point really was that HT2-TL's in a stereo setup reproduce music very faithfully without the aid of a subwoofer.
My favorite music setup is really sparse: Lossless FLAC's > Squeezebox Transporter > XLR cables > PS Audio HCA-2 power amp > HT2-TL'S
Movies necessitated the sub in my case and I will utilize it to tweak my music but I do not see more than 5% room for improvement. It's a different story with my 50 yr old ears!

I do have a similar setup. :D  But when you're right, you're right, hence my agreement with you.  Subs really need to be EQ'd (take the room out of the equation).

I understood your post, and agree with you to a point.  I guess my point was that even though the HT2-TL's have decent bass output (surprising actually), there is so much more to be had integrating an EQ'd sub for music playback.  I tried 5 or 6 times over the last couple of years to remove the sub for music.  I can't do it.  It's not about quantity either.  It's 100% about quality.  In my opinion, the room just causes so much trouble below 100Hz that an EQ'd sub is such a great solution.  The right sub(s) are just amazing sounding.

And 50 is not old!  I'm not that far behind you.

+1

My HT2-TLs sound better with my sub than without it when playing music.  +1 on the age thing too.

Don't have HT2-TL's, but I'm using the Velodyne SMS-1 with my ST's and Rythmik F12.

"Best" means something different to different people.  I'd say the Anti-mode is the easiest.  The Velodyne is probably next easiest as it has an automatic mode that works rather well, but it also has more features like a built-in high-pass filter and you can manually tweak its settings.  I use a Behringer Feedback Destroyer (1124P) and Room EQ Wizard to do the manual EQ'ing and room measurements.  I think the BFD is the "best," but that's just me.

What is your associated gear?  What sub are you going to use?
