Volume 2: How do you control it?
« on: 19 Oct 2011, 06:18 am »
Someone posted the following in another thread that seems to be locked:

"In general, is there a best practice for this? Amp high, pre low? Amp low, pre high? Both nearer the middle (that's how I have it), or is it completely dependant on the gear in question?"

Aside from not knowing why that thread is locked, I don't believe the above question was answered.

Both my DAC and active preamp seem to have volume control and gain. My amp also has a volume control. Does it make any difference which volume control to use to achieve the desired volume level? If you turn up the volume control to the maximum level on any component is that the same as bypassing the volume control?

My present speakers are too inefficient (85dB) and I must use an active preamp with my 10 wpc triode tube amp. However I find that if I set the volume controls on my preamp and amp to the maximum, I can get very good volume levels by setting the volume control on my DAC to the 1 to 2 o'clock position. Is there any problem in doing this?

I don't want to by another amp (more powerful) or speakers (more efficient) because money is tight. I was also led to believe that a triode tube amp would generally offer more micro details.  I am more interested in having more revealing and resolving sound even if the bass is somewhat light. I want to hear the delicacies of music and not party thumping bass to rattle my neighbors.

I'd set the DAC and amp to max and use the preamp to adjust the gain.

+1 to John's response.

Cheers.
