I have the above cd player hooked up to an Odyssey Stratos amp and matching Tempest preamp and VMPS RM2 speakers. If I set the volume control on the 4000 remote too high (1-19 range), audible distortion results but stops at lower output level from CD player.  THE 4000 has 2V max output. Has any other 4000 owners experienced this and if so how did you deal with it other than merely lowering the volume till the distortion stops?

I didn't have any issues with mine when I used it but this may be of interest to you.

http://www.hifi-planet.com/ah3-enhp.htm

If you scroll halfway down the page you will get to the section labeled Adjusting the output voltage of your AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000. You'll note that the output voltage is set (on the 4000) at 2.55 volts. That may be a bit high for the Tempest (Klaus or Alex would know for sure).

You can lower the output to 1.25 volts if needed. Just follow the instructions on Herman's website.

Thanks for the enlightening reply. I browsed your systems and it seems you're independently wealthy, incredibly knowledgeable and have great taste. I wonder if there is anyone out there that has done this mod, on a similar system to mine, and can share the results. I'd hate to do this and unintentionally take a sonic step backwards. It just seems that it gets a little shrill to the point of producing a little ear fatigue at times which is what I was hoping the tubed output buffer of the 4000 would eliminate.

No I'm not. I am going to post a question in the Odyssey circle on input voltage requirements for the Tempest preamp. That may help.

I had that same CDP.  Bought it (used) for it's volume control only to find out it only went down to about 1/2 (I had no other volume control in my purist system at the time, so I put it aside).  Finally got separate volume controls but by then it had developed very serious distortion.  Importer suggested a new $180 board, but I wasn't brave enough to DIY or risk the money on a possible fix so I sold it for parts.
