This is not the 5th generation Airport Extreme - the new one's model number is MD031LL/A - I just paid $179 for it for a friend's birthday 

Not a bad deal, just not the latest update.

What are the differences?

The biggest difference appears to be the wireless transmit power output.  Although the 802.11b power output dropped ~ 11%, the Gen 5 Airport Extreme had an increased power output of ~ 62% to 182% on the other protocols/bands.
