possible diffusers and basstraps?
« on: 29 Sep 2011, 10:21 pm »
I have a buddy who manages a restaraunt and they were throwing these out, he snagged them for me:

So I was thinking take the black drum things (two of them there), line with plastic and fill them with... sand?  Or maybe insulation..and place them in the corners as basstraps.

I was thinking of taking the tea containers (very large, very solid steel or aluminum) and filling them with sand, stacking them, and placing them between my speakers against the front wall as a diffuser..

Or cutting them in half and attaching them directly to the wall..

... I'll make them look pretty of course, paint, or some sort of cover...

Am I into something good here?

Well I went ahead and gave it a quick try, lol, just stuffed cotton pillows into the black ones and placed them in the corners and simply stacked the iced-t bins on my stand, against the wall, they are well over three feet tall as a stacked unit. It sure did tighten things up even further. Vocals are just that much clearer and soundstage, etc, improved.

I think once I take off the labels, hack them in half, remove the unnecessary parts, polish them, and get them up on the wall it should look really good.

Is polished metal an okay diffuser surface or should I paint them?

 ...free and cheerful.

Thanks for the info, I am looking into similar options for diffusion/bass traps. Please keep us updated as your project progress's.

I will. My buddy is a welder and he's got them so he can slice em up. I'll post pics and all once we figure out the best approach. We're thinking sliced in half with a backing so they can be sand filled and lower the resonance. But they are very high quality thick stainless steel, so outta be great.

Considering some sort of cover as well, maybe a veneer.
