How would the Squeezebox work in this situation?
« on: 26 Sep 2011, 06:19 pm »
I am looking at the squeezebox touch, but I am unsure how it would function with my setup. My music files are on a NAS on the 2nd floor connected via ethernet. I would like to stream the music to the Touch over the ethernet, but the laptop running the squeezebox server can only connect via wifi. So how does the squeezebox server work in this case? Does the music stream to the laptop from the NAS via wifi, then back to router via wifi, and via ethernet to the touch? Would it be best to have the server laptop on ethernet also?

I neither have a NAS, nor own a Touch, but I have run Slimserver on various platforms to my Bolder modded SB3 for over 6 years now.

You would need to install a Slimserver instance on the NAS.
The music would be served from the NAS to the Touch via ethernet.
Your laptop would access via wifi essentially as a giant remote to control the Touch.

Well my NAS does not appear to be supported by the squeezebox server, so I figured that I would need to have the squeezebox server running on a computer.

I would be using an iphone or ipad with iPeng for control of the squeezebox server instead of the laptop.

Yes, that's correct.

It might work quite well as you describe. It will depend a lot on the health of your wireless network. I've streamed to as many as six Squeezeboxes in my home over wireless (although the server is connected via ethernet and the files are on a local hard drive), which means six simultaneous wireless streams. You would only have two.

But the chances of it working well are increased as you eliminate wireless connections from the equation.

BTW, if you have a second computer in your home you can easily test it before buying the Squeezebox Touch by running a Touch emulation program on the second computer.

First, install Squeezebox Server on the laptop or computer on which you plan to run the server. Point the Music Folder at the shared directory on the NAS where your music is stored and let SBS scan the library.

Then install SqueezePlay on the second computer. Run SqueezePlay, which behaves a lot like a Touch, and stream music to the second computer. This should give you a good idea of how well it will work.

I guess I showcase my ignorance - I was not aware that you could remote locate your music collection, on a device with no Slimserver s/w on it.

I have always used a PC at one end of the chain.

I have often used handheld (iTouch with iPeng, laptop) to remotely control the SB3.
