I may pick up some used MMGs in the area, but am worried about placement: In my modest living room they would only be 2ft out from the rear wall with about 3ft from side walls give or take. I know the larger MMG models need plenty of space, would this apply to the regular MMGs as well?

I own a pair of MMG's and 1.6's.  2' from the rear wall will be fine and 3' form the side or corner walls will give it more bass which the MMG's could use.  You will be OK.

 I think they might not have the best time at 2', but they will work, although I'm sure you have good room treatments to make up for it..

 Wushuliu, I think it would be neat if you could review these against your other stuff. I'd love a review.. But buy them, from the looks of things, MMG's are a modders paradise. I am completely in love with mine.

Just to clarify, MMG is a model from Magnepan.
As previous posters have said, that should be enough room and you can experiment with placement a bit once they're in your hands.
Mine are hung 3' up in the air on hinges and are a couple of feet out from the wall, for example.
