Alright gentlemen, this is going to bite me in the ass, I know it...  long story short - - - Im looking to convert a car amp for home-audio use...     Is this possible?

Here is a power supply I own:

I am not sure if this can A) be done, and B) what would be needed to get this to work...

I won't bite you on that one!

I had been eyeing up my mono 500watt rms sub amp for some time now, wondering how to get that bad boy running in the house.  Research led me to believe (could be wrong of course) that the concern is that in the car, an amp like that can draw huge amps (30+) and that is how it creats power - I could not find an affordable power supply that could swing those amps.

I sold the unit.

Sorry that I cannot help, just your post struck a cord for me!

It would have been nice to use the car sub in the house too, but too few mono amps can drive a 2 ohm load either...

It could probably be done, but you'd need to convert your house's 120v AC power into 12v DC.

Additionally, I don't think car amplifiers are the quietest things ever made, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

Whoops, shoulda looked at your first link. Yeah, that *might* work, I'm a little doubtfull that a car amp only draws 3 amps. Like mcgsxr says, most car amplifiers draw HUGE amps (20 - 40+ amps).

This one probably requires less draw since it's tripath, but that'd be the first thing I'd check before buying.

You might find that you'd need something a lot more complicated (like a battery charger -> car battery -> amp) just to get this thing powered, then you'd have the whole noise factor to deal with...

A6M-ZERO, what size is the fuse in the amp or in line to the amp. Check
the literature that came with this amp for that spec. If it is not available call Blaupunkt  customer service and ask for a technician. This fuse size would tell you how many amps your supply should have. Your might go the next size larger to CYA.

The thought of all that power on the cheap is a tempting thought, isn't it? I believe most digital amps are stable down to about 2 ohms.

I am sure out of the hundreds of car amps  -  there are a few who can run quietly. I wouldnt know where to begin though. hah  Ive chosen the tripath amp because I feel it would require the least amount of current (amps) to power.  It looks as though I may be incorrect in that assumption.  The goal was to get the same fidelity as the Powerwave, but with more power...on the cheap.

Thats an excellent idea.  Definately something I will be interested in looking into in the not too distant future.  If it is reasonable, I will definately let the people on these boards know.
