What kind of TT is this?
« on: 16 Dec 2009, 07:44 am »
Does this table look familiar to anyone? I'm trying to find out what it is as there are no markings on it anywhere that would give me a clue. It looks like an older table, belt drive, with a metal platter and sub platter. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It was given to me and I'd like to find out more about it.

If I were to hazard a guess I would say it's an AR turntable.

I say no to the AR, not that I have an answer either.
I think the AR always have a power switch in the left front, away from the tonearm hole.

My findings exactly. I've ruled out an AR.

It could very well be an AR table, with someone making a new base for it. If there was a picture of the table with the mat off, I could tell. The one give away is the hole for the tonearm. I think there is the old AR suspension below the new custom bass.

However, LordCloud, this is yet another table that has motor problems when it ages. As someone who has owned 3 AR tables, I would turn and run. They are a bitch to work on and there are no real replacement motors for the table, unless you modify the crap out of it like I did with my ARmod.

ya, also looks like an ar deck w/custom base.  if it is, the motor is likely a hurst 3001-001.  i picked up a new one directly from ar many years back, for my c&j walker cj55.  3009-001 is a higher torque replacement.  dunno if you can still get either anywhere, but i would try here:

http://www.beckwithelectronics.com/HURST/specs_a.htm

if they don't have them, they might know where one is...

If it's an AR table, they really modded the base and moved the position of the on/off switch. I looked around on vinyl nirvana(http://www.vinylnirvana.com/) and saw some modded tables and none moved the switch position, and none have the heavy black base that mine has either. But the pulley, platter, and sub platter look exactly like mine.

These are pics from vinyl nirvana showing the platter, sub platter, and pulley.

I'll put a pic of mine up tomorrow.

It's an AR with a custom base.  Ain't NOBODY built bases like that back in the day.   :thumb:
