BDA-1 and television
« on: 27 Oct 2011, 05:40 am »
I have a Panasonic TC-L37U3 television (nothing to write home about--very "plain" set) with an optical ouput for digital audio.

Feeding the signal from the television (configured/setup correctly) into the BDA-1 gets the DAC to lock at at "48K0", but there is no sound.

All inputs work on the DAC, and so do the balanced and unbalanced outputs.  It is when the television is connected to either of the optical inputs of the DAC that I get no sound.  The BCD-1 passes a signal nicely through the optical input (I tried that to verify that the cable was fine--and it is).

Are there circumstances in which certain equipment will not "work" with the BDA-1?  I would appreciate any ideas anyone has about how I might resolve this issue.

The BDA-1 will not decode Dolby Digital signals.  Normally, you would configure a TV or Set Top Box to output 2 channel PCM if you are going to send the digital audio output to a stereo DAC instead of a multi-channel AVR that can decode Dolby Digital.

However, looking at the manual for the Panasonic TC-L37U3, I do not see a menu setting to do this.  The manual simply states:

"You can enjoy your Home theater by connecting a Dolby Digital (5.1 channel) decoder and “Multi Channel” amplifier to the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminals.

When an ATSC channel is selected, the output from the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack will be Dolby Digital. When an NTSC channel is selected, the output will be PCM."
