New Sonorus Reel to Reel....with tubes!
« on: 13 Aug 2011, 03:46 pm »
Built around NOS parts from the ReVox PR99 and featuring new electronics. I never thought I'd see anyone start a come-back on reel to reel decks. This has to be a first, and apparently with tube output stages.

Just an FYI

I have a good friend in Geneva who records electro-jazz and other kinds of electronic music to an old Fostex (I think) reel to reel, and maaaaan the sound he gets at playback :o. So warm and round yet dynamic. It seems to act as an analog compressor as well, which does amazing things for electronic music.

I'd love to have that sound chez moi. But doesn't seem very practical. I guess you could record CDs to tape?

Many old farts here at the AC that had RTRs in the heyday, put LPs onto RTR and shelved the LP. I have a ReVox A77 half track, and it's fun to roll out once in a while. Still sounds good for a 36 year old machine.

Hint: I was low.

Good thing Revox was noted for reliability cuz what happens when there are no more leftover Revox parts?

When I went to the CES show back in the 80's, Revox would show their remote audio system with CD player, receiver and speakers. Revox would first put on a CD and the system always sounded very mid-fi. Then, they would turn on their 3/4 inch Studer-Revox reel with the exact same live recording. Every person they played it too would gasp in disbelief. The sound was night and day difference coming out of the tape system over the CD. Very unbelievable.

:o  That buys a lot of reconditioned Revox's.

Not saying the Revox wasn't great, but digital has come a long way since the 80's.
16/44 PCM digital done right can sound excellent.

One of the most desirable (affordable)  old machines is the Studer-Revox G36 MK3 from the 60's. This was the last of the breed to use tubes.

Mainly, I was referring to the quality of the audio system. That was such a mediocre sounding system, and it came to life when the Studer came on. Revox had the system plastered against a wall and the speakers were only about 3-4 feet apart.

Just to watch people's surprised faces, I would hang around for 3-4 demos each year. It was too funny.
