Empire Capacitor (Pabst Motor)
« on: 3 Jul 2011, 12:15 pm »
Over at Audiokarma in the Rek-O-Kut section, a poster (funkwrench) stated that replacing the capacitor for the Pabst motor corrected the slightly fast operation these motors seem to exhibit.

"Your motor is the famous Pabst motor. It works off of the frequency of the voltage out of the wall, through a "faking cap," the big capacitor found under the deck. The 4uF cap is fairly easy to replace, and replacing it usually results in mo' accurate speed, in my experience. I have found that these turntables usually run a little fast until you replace that cap. But I do not know why that is."

I asked a friend (an electrical engineer) to help me pick out a replacement cap. He examined what I had and immediately zeroed in on the rating printed on the capacitor that came with my deck. Its labeled 50Hz. My motor is labeled 60Hz. Is this how they all came OR do I have an oddball? I sure would appreciate it if some other Empire owners would take a peek and let me know what the specs are for your capacitor.

This is out of a 208. I'm not sure if the 598/698 series is the same value as I think the motors are different RPMs. Not sure tho.
