I have read some interesting anecdotes of TRLs and their mods over at Headfi.  It is insane what I did not know.  Looking at that sort of evidence, I would be leery, double leery stashing my hard earned $s on one of their products. 

Shindos have excellent resale values, I think it has to do with execution and desirability.  InLivingStereo is moving thus having a sale....still the cheapest Shindo pre is 3.5K demo/slightly used.

The Dude is actually supposed to be quite good.  I had and greatly enjoyed a Shindo Auregies-L, but its output impedance isn't a great match for a lot of power amps.

I recently ordered a Tubeguru.hu ECC808 based preamp with phono section that supposedly bested a Shindo Masseto--I will see for myself how good it is, but its price was approaching 3k (intro pricing/money back guaranty) whereas the Shindos are all well over 3k and its supposed to have an exquisite phono section with transformer gain.

I paid for it today and am hoping its in my hands in the next 3 weeks.  Berto should have one within a week, so I'll be making it over to his place to see what I can expect.

There are no reviews I'm aware of but the website currently is tubeguru.hu   A new website and some 6moons reviews are scheduled though which will lead to price increases. 

This is a blind purchase for me based on being extremely impressed with the sound of the Tubeguru F2a push pull monoblock amplifiers.  Supposedly, as good as the amps are, their preamps are their truly special products.

Shindo makes great pre-amp ...
TRL dude will stand tall against any pre-amp at any price ... for a neutral sound ...
I have their Solid State battery pre-amp ... very similar sound - or no sound ...
 
I can't say for sure but Paul would honor a return if it does not perform to you expectation.
 
That would be different story - if that is not the flavor one wants ...
