Another Orion 3.2.1 builder/owner here. Yes they are good speakers and an easy load for power amps. Best wishes for a good showing with the 9B-SST/Orion pairing. I look forward to reading the resulting reviews from Axpona.

Where do I find full information on the 4-channel 9B-SST?

Thanks, Ron.

Hi Ron

The 4 channel 9B is identical to the website 9B except one channel is removed because the 9B is modular in construction.

That looks pretty good, James. I'm looking forward to listening impressions.

As a side note, whenever I see Bryston products in real life, I am struck by how much more visually attractive they are than is conveyed on bryston.com. While I know that audio performance is what really matters and what you focus on, I still really think that you should have higher resolution images on bryston.com to showcase your products' considerable visual "drool factor" a bit better.

I owned the Linkwitz Orion II . Great speakers in many regards, very musical, very dynamic BUT they didn't do voice well. As I love voice recordings I sold them.

I have to say that I could hardly agree less. In my opinion, voices reproduction is something the Orion really excels at. Mine have the latest crossover revision (3.2.1) and from what I've read, voice reproduction was somewhat of a weekness of the early versions.

You should have upgraded the crossovers for your Orions instead of selling them!  :green:

Ron: The Orion 3.2.1 speakers as I am sure you know, were designed using the Peerless woofers. The Orion-4 prototype speakers we showed at RMAF had a model of the SEAS woofers that is in production, but was designed for a box cabinet. The production Orion-4 speakers that we showed at AXPONA in Atlanta and will show next at AXPONA in NY use a new design SEAS woofer made to Siegfried's specifications for an open baffle speaker. They require a more robust amplifier than the previous design required to drive them to their capabilities. There is now little if any need for a subwoofer. The Bryston 9B-SST amplifiers did that job of driving the Orion-4s with ease and provided great detail in the other ranges. The power of course was required for the woofers. The amplifier modules driving the tweeters and midrange were coasting.

Beautiful speakers... awfully familiar looking though.
gary

It well might look familiar!
The Orion was released three years earlier! (September 2002)

Seems like John Atkinson liked what he heard, at least.

I agree. Have no fear, James said on this very board that the website will be redesigned. As to when it'll be done, only he knows...

Dr. Linkwitz & His Orion Impress Bay Area Audiophiles

Yesterday, BAAS members were treated to the unique and highly capable “Orion IV Loudspeaker” system from Linkwitz Lab and Wood Artistry.

Sporting a “classic” planar baffle for mids and treble, bass is handled by a clever “W baffle” – a feature that no doubt contributes to the speaker’s fine top-to-bottom tonal balance and soundstage stability.

Also contruting to the overall sound were electronics from Pass Labs, Marantz, Bryston, and Auraliti (whose music server is becoming as ubiquitous at BAAS events as the first movement of “Symphonic Dances).

Indeed, I heard several members comment to each other after the event: “best sound I’ve heard in a long time.”

But that’s not all…. Also on hand were the designer (Siegfried Linkwitz) and builder (Don Naples). In addition to the obvious technical expertise of these two professionals, it was clear to me that both were avid audiophiles and music lovers too. Each describes his path in the audio biz, and the technical goals that were the targets of their efforts on Orion.

A discography of the music played is given below.

Thanks to West Valley College and all the folks that helped make this gig the success that it was.

Here is a link to Audiogon showing tho Orion-4 speakers with the Bryston 9B-SST amplifiers.

At the BAAS demonstration there were plenty of compliments about the sound.
Next AXPONANYC and I hope if all goes as planned, a new surprise in the quality of the sound.

Axponia NY Show Last Weekend

Linkwitz Orion-4 Speakers
By Art Dudley • Posted: Jun 26, 2011

One might argue that there are more research-driven engineering innovations in the Linkwitz Lab Orion-4 than in most other high-end loudspeakers— which is remarkable, considering that it sells for less than $15,000/pair—but at the Axpona show I found it easy to forget all of that and simply enjoy the speaker's musical prowess.

Driven by Bryston amplifiers and fed by an Auraliti L1000 digital music player and MSB D/A processor, the Linkwitz loudspeakers disappeared into their own wide, deep, and mildly recessed (as opposed to in-your-face) soundfield. In addition to being spatially convincing, the Orion-4s sounded open, clear, and appropriately colorful:

One of the finest demonstrations at the show.
