4B ST fuse blows
« on: 2 Jun 2011, 05:49 am »
Got a 4B ST that blows the Channel 1 7A fuse - sometimes runs for hours before it does this - then may blow three in a row.Couple days later - may play for 12 hours.Just heard the left channel drop out - looked over and left LED was flashing yellow - then went out altogether (blown fuse). Certainly not playing at clipping levels - substituted Parasound A-23 and no problem. 4B ST sounds great when it's working and I've got a box coming from Bryston  - so will return it for warranty repair. Just curious - anyone have similar symptoms ? and what did Bryston do to fix it ? I'm impressed with their transparency about what they build - posting schematics is really helpful and shows confidence that their product can't be reverse engineered and then slapped together by unskilled labour. Do think it's a neat trick to back up the rear panel fuses with slightly higher current internal fuses - that way if some idiot wants to put whatever's laying around  in as a replacement - all's he's gonna do is blow the second internal fuse -way better than smokin a transformer or lighting up the entire power supply. Guess that's what comes from the experience of selling gear to the recording industry ?

That rarest of all consumer experiences - fast and competent repair. Box and packaging arived within three days of placing order. Packed unit up -shipped out via FedEx - back in less than two weeks.  I HATE intermittent problems and this would have taken me a long time to figure out. Bryston tech recognised symptoms from previous amps that had been returned with identical  problem - oxidised bias set pot. Fixed - have over a week on it since FedEx returned it - this does in fact seem to have done the trick.
Great sounding amp - first time I've had a amp that noticeably improved imaging  (usually this is a source or pre-amp thing)- bass performance is tight and detailed.
15 year old electronics do fail - still - a very positive experience.Good people doin good work.

An interesting point here is that this experience with Bryston is far from extraordinary. This is typical for them -- just business as usual.

This is why I make a point to always buy their products if they offer one that I'm looking for. I know that should it ever fail, they will fix it quickly and efficiently.

Cheers,
Ian.
