Verita w/subs vs. Ported Tempesta
« on: 28 May 2011, 07:52 pm »
I'm new to this forum, and I first heard about Selah Audio on Audio Circle, and was really impressed with the high quality drivers and overall designs that Rick's done. I decided to order a Demo pair of sealed Veritas from Rick 2 weeks ago, and I've been very impressed with them.  I listen to almost exclusively Classical music (with a little jazz thrown in), and they do a tremendous job with orchestral music and classical piano. They're dynamic, powerful, and a very musical speaker than I could live with for a long time. I've alway been enamoured with the great imaging and point source aspect of monitors, and with virtually no baffle at all, these certainly fit the bill. I do need a little more bass extension though; being that these are sealed, they give up some bass extension. Well, I saw Emotivas sub sale, and decided to try 2 of the Ultra 12 Subs, despite my misgivings about integrating them with the Veritas (I think there is no risk; I have 30 days to return the Subs to Emotiva). I've spent the last 2 days dialing these subs in and adjusting the crossover/phase/level controls, as well as the positioning of the Subs. I finally got them pretty well dialed in, so they speak with one voice with the Veritas (most of the time). When there is substantial Bass information they really light up the room. For example, one of the best organ recordings ever made, Jean Guillou performing Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition sounds spectacular (Dorian DOR-99117). My quandary is: for roughly what I've got in the Veritas/Subs, I could get a pair of ported Tempestas (and get rid of the 15 inch cubes in my living room :D). Could anyone on the Forum give me a comparison of the two? I've never heard the Accuton Midrange, and I wonder what differences I could expect there? (Of course, the other option would be a Pair of ported Veritas). My system consists of: Sony Transport/Benchmark DAC 1/NAD 326BEE Preamp/UPA-1 Monoblocs in a smallish to medium size room with a vaulted ceiling.

I also own a pair of sealed Verita's and feel the need for additional low end extension. I don't want to add a sub to my setup.    A ported Tempesta nor a ported Verita is going to give you the low end energy you want.   I have had a couple discussions with Rick @ this....its a matter of box size.     What you need is a ported floor standing  Circondare.   Rick has stated a cost effective cabinet is in the works to build a floor standing Circondare....

Dwight,
Thank you for the reply. Another option would be the powered monitor Rick is working on. With an integrated amp/crossover built into the speaker, some pretty astounding bass extension can be achieved from a monitor. Actually, I suspect the ported Verita would be adequate for 95% of the Classical music I listen to; but for organ music, or a big bass drum (i.e. Copland's Fanfare for the Common man) you'd definitely need more bass extension and dynamics. Have you heard the ported Verita by chance?

The Tempesta has quite adequate bass for music listening, with all the fundamentals clear and clean, and with balanced weight. However, large bass drums, organ pedals and movie effects won't vibrate your chest like a large system with good subs, at least in my room.
FWIW, my room tends to thin out bass quite a bit; a room with more bass loading than mine might obviate the need for a sub. But, if your tastes demand powerful bass, look for a great sub. A floorstanding Circondare may get closer, but for purity, truth and beauty of tone I'd go with Tempestas and a sub.
The T's would blend well with very fine subs, imo, as there is no midbass bloat to worry about.

You might also consider ported Veritas with a subwoofer. I have the ported Veritas and just turn on the sub for movies, after dialing it in the integration is not bad at all, and I like the increased sensitivity. I remember reading that SSR owners have had luck with this as well. Anyway you go, I'm sure you'll be happy with the outcome  :thumb:

It sounds like he's not using these for Home Theater?

The bass example was from an organ recording... I guess the question is how often is this an issue?

What about a ported Texas Revelator Tower? You could use a Revelator tweeter in-lieu of the Air-Circ if you didn't want that one.  Or are you wanting something with the RAAL tweeter?

Dave,
I'm looking for a Monitor size speaker like the Verita, or Tempesta; I've got a smallish listening room,
a tower would really be too much. I'm leaning toward the Ported Verita at this point. Rick says it will give very good coverage of most music.

I say do it. In a small room the bass should be great, and for me the rest of the spectrum is all but unbeatable, even at much higher prices.
