cartridge demagnetizer technique ?
« on: 17 Apr 2011, 02:04 am »
Heu guys,
'm looking for a cartridge demagnetizer schematic ?
Any ideas?
I'd assume that it would generate some type of decaying sine wave.
Not sure whether I'm thinking in a right direction.
Let me know what you think...

Thanks

Yes, that would work.  But since it is not something you have to do every day, why not just use a potentiometer to perform the decay function?  Use a FryBaby or CD player as a source.

I'm not exactly sure what signal levels are required, though.  As a reference point, I once broke in a Goldring with a FryBaby (1V drive level) overnight with no discernible damage.

1 Volt !!!
I was thinking along the lines of cartridge nominal output level. From about 0.3 to 3 mV.

I guess cartridge DC impedance would limit current and power dissipation when 1 v is applied. I'm bit uneasy about measuring impedance with multimeter as it would magnetize cartridge windings with DC current.

The FryBaby uses 100 ohms in series with each output.  But yeah, maybe 0.1V peak level is enough for what you need.  See if you can dig up specs from one of the retail products.
